Check out the DOS utility ANIS.SYS.

From a DOS command prompt, type HELP ANSI.SYS.

Read the file about control characters and escape codes.

Becareful some termals and programs do not like color codes that read
email.

try downloading a copy of TheDraw ANSI editor.  it gives you the option of
selecting 16 foreground colors (0-15) and 8 background colors (0-7) via
the Alt-A option:

0    1    2    3    4    5    6    7    
blk  blu  grn  cyn  red  mag  brn  lgry

8    9    10   11   12   13   14   15   
dgry lblu lgrn lcyn lred lmag yel  wht

lines, or other extendeded ascii characters are "drawn" using the Function
Keys, toggled by Alt-F.

don't abuse the color, it can be easily overused.  ;)
