I think using '<' and '>' instead of '(' and ')' was intended.
It's the ascii kind of motion blur effect: The biker is real fast

Mmmm.... no... I don't see it. It just looks like a very bumpy ride to
me... To add a feeling of motion I'd do something like this:

Not always. There the ones you are thinking of (pedals in front and
handlebars under the seat) and also a type that look almost normal
except they are low and squat with a long front end (like a chopper
motorcycle without the motor.)
