i'm here again. but i've got a problem. it seems that i can't read
joan's postings, except those quoted by others, after changing isp.
could anyone give me some advice? u know, this _can_ be a BIG loss!

Glory... a good solution for now would be to get a better ISP or to go back
to where you were before! Other than that, try DejaNews www.dejanews.com or
hunt out a public newsserver somewhere.
Do you have Free ISPs where you are? If so, you could sign up for one of
those, and dial into them just for the news server.

He taught me how to subscribe to a newsgroup, how to put their wonderful news server in my config, how to retrieve messages and how are messages linked in a thread, even though I told him many times I knew them. He tried subscribing to aaa as I requested, and he kept telling me he's got all of the 139 messages. He then repeated his powerful conclusion 3 times: "I don't see there's a problem!" It probably isn't AOL, it is the fact that
Usenet does not have a single backbone hub, and not
all messages propagate to all servers.
I have been so mad at time, trying to find
articles that I see partly quoted, I have been ready
to quit my ISP, but I haven't been able to be certain
what the problem is.
Ten years ago other computer networks were
run by volunteers, had good ASCII and ANSI discussion
groups, and never lost messages.
And now Usenet services cost money, and they
are not dependable.
It looks like dejanews is either the solution
or the problem, I really don't need to read all
articles in a thread, but I want what I feel I am
paying for.

Oh, it's usually support all right, at least for some meanings of the
word. It just is about as far from technical as anything can get.
You do realize that the person you spoke to was most likely some poor
underpaid kid whose only job qualifications were the ability to answer the
phone and recite a diagnostic flowchart. The fact that he was able to
actually subscribe to a newsgroup shows that he'd had some training.
After all, think of all the computer illiterates joining AOL each day, a
significant fraction of them unwilling or incapable of reading a manual by
themselves. They need someone to do it for them, and to calm them down
when they think that they've broken the computer or that it's being mean
to them.
This is support. Having the few people who know something about the actual
"technical" details aswering the phones would not only keep them away from
real work, it would almost certainly also drive away the customers. After
all, few of them would like to be told to "get a fscking clue before
messing around with the BIOS setup".

Since the subject has come up, here is a comedy piece someone sent me a
long time ago. While the ending MAY not have happened, I'm willing to

[ARGH!] This woman was good friends with my supervisor, who was also a French professor (still is, matter of fact--and in addition, she's now also my wife), so I couldn't deal with her the way I really wanted to, and was forced to explain sweetly and gently to her that computers needed power just like office lights, and if the office lights were out, then the computer was too, and that yes, if she hadn't saved her work she had probably lost everything she'd done so far in WordPerfect. But I could still fantasize: "A power outage? Aha! Okay, we've got it licked now. Do you still have the boxes and manuals and packing stuff your computer came in?" "Well, yes, I keep them in the closet." "Good! Go get them, and unplug your system and pack it up just like it was when you got it.
