Oh, it's usually support all right, at least for some meanings of the
word. It just is about as far from technical as anything can get.


You do realize that the person you spoke to was most likely some poor
underpaid kid whose only job qualifications were the ability to answer the
phone and recite a diagnostic flowchart. The fact that he was able to
actually subscribe to a newsgroup shows that he'd had some training.

After all, think of all the computer illiterates joining AOL each day, a
significant fraction of them unwilling or incapable of reading a manual by
themselves. They need someone to do it for them, and to calm them down
when they think that they've broken the computer or that it's being mean
to them.

This is support. Having the few people who know something about the actual
"technical" details aswering the phones would not only keep them away from
real work, it would almost certainly also drive away the customers. After
all, few of them would like to be told to "get a fscking clue before
messing around with the BIOS setup".
