My experience is the opposite. I often see ascii art html pages that show up in a proportional font, but I've never had a problem with plain-text. Here are some examples (from Joan's list, under "personal exhibits", first the page URL, then the URL of a screen shot from it): http://users.breworld.net/m/martin.atkins/asciiart/ http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/pics/temp/proportional1.gif http://www.geocities.com/theshedragon/ http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/pics/temp/proportional2.gif http://home9.inet.tele.dk/jez/ http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/pics/temp/proportional3.gif http://www.gtcom.net/~krogg/ascii/ http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/pics/temp/proportional4.gif http://www.angelfire.com/mn/Maija/asciiart.html http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/pics/temp/proportional5.gif Going through that list I stumbled on another interesting phenomenon: http://209.220.139.116/tooshy/indexts.html http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/pics/temp/what_happened_here.gif -- (, http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/cgi/asciichat/ /|__--__ . __--__ |\ '__ /|\ _{ _ `.' / `.,_ _________ | _________ _,.' It was not the "problem" you described though. > you didnt have your browser maximised, > if you had it set correctly, it would have been fine 1. There is no such thing as "maximisation of windows" on this computer (clue: not everybody uses Windows). 2. "Maximising" a browser window at the screen resolution I use would be ridiculous. 3. There is no "incorrect" way to size a browser window. 4. It is quite possible (and quite simple) to have ascii art in an HTML page without it wrapping. Here is an example: http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/pics/temp/wide_picture.html -- (, http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/cgi/asciichat/ /|__--__ . __--__ |\ '__ /|\ _{ _ `.' / `.,_ _________ | _________ _,.' what happened there was obvious, you didnt have your browser maximised,
if you had it set correctly, it would have been fine
also you gave the wrong URL for the page you were viewing
http://209.220.139.116/tooshy/cowboy.html
that would be the correct one

The style sheet for those pages specifies "monospaced" as the last font family for PRE, when it should really be "monospace" without the "d". I know I've posted CSS samples here that have this bug, though with Deja's archive being the way it is, I can't be sure if I started was the first to spread the particular piece of misinformation. >http://www.geocities.com/theshedragon/ >http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/pics/temp/proportional2.gif This one has FONT tags within PRE. It _is_ technically a standards violation, though I'm surprised that Netscape should break on it. The proper solution would be CSS. That's not the only thing broken on those pages -- the JavaScript seems to break Netscape is various ways too, such as making links not work, but I'm not going to start trying to fix that. >http://home9.inet.tele.dk/jez/ >http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/pics/temp/proportional3.gif An unclosed FONT tag _before_ PRE. Again, technically an error, but I wouldn't have expected it to matter. Easily fixed by removing it. If you want to specify the font for ascii art in HTML, use style sheets. >http://www.gtcom.net/~krogg/ascii/ >http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/pics/temp/proportional4.gif Same as above. >http://www.angelfire.com/mn/Maija/asciiart.html >http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/pics/temp/proportional5.gif Okay, that's just a CSS font family spec without a catch-all entry. Add "monospace" after "Courier New" and it should work even if none of the named fonts are present. >Going through that list I stumbled on another interesting phenomenon: > >http://209.220.139.116/tooshy/indexts.html >http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/pics/temp/what_happened_here.gif Now that's just ugly.
