According to the weekly top 40 the song can not be all that crappy...

According to JavE it has no illegal characters, so it *IS* ascii, and
it's in the form of a picture so I'd personally have to assume it was
art.

It could do without the nu-metal-esque rap rubbish. Aside from that, it's a cool song, with a cool singer, and a cool video.

I considered buying their album (which is unusual for me as I don't normally buy very many Top 40 items.

>According to JavE it has no illegal characters, so it *IS* ascii, and

ASCII, yes - art, however, is subjective. I'd consider it ASCII art.

There are some things in the world of art that I wouldn't consider artistic.

For example, Damien Hurst (sp?) won the Turner Prize for his piece, which was a cow that he had cut in half down the middle, and had
put into two tanks of formaldehyde.

The two tanks were side by side, with a gap of 2 or 3 feet between the two, so that the viewer could walk between the two for a
better look.

It's not that I'm squeamish, or offended by the use of an animal in this piece, but I just don't consider it art.

However, many of the visitors to Londons' Tate Modern gallery where the exhibit was housed, felt that it was.

I condsider Anubis' cauldron piece to be art. It seems that Bateau does not, which is fine.

I looked up art at merriam-webster...
Main Entry: 2art
Pronunciation: 'rt
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old French, from Latin art-, ars --
more at ARM
Date: 13th century
1-3: Your right not art...
4 a : the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially
in the production of aesthetic objects; also : works so produced b (1)
: FINE ARTS (2) : one of the fine arts (3) : a graphic art
5 :prolly not art under this either...
6 : decorative or illustrative elements in printed matter

Well, I guess if I printed it it would fall under art...so I'm gunna
go with art myself on this one, but just in case...What makes it not
art? I'd hate to make the same mistake myself...to put all that work
into something and have it not what it should be.

i never would have thought that a simple cauldron with some modern
song
lyrics would have sparked such a debate. for the record, i happen to
think that "Bring me to Life" is an excellent song, and Evanescene is
a good band, but i predict that they'll be a flash in the pan, that
they'll have a really good 15 minutes of fame that they'll be able to
ride on for awhile (and perhaps some will do side projects and solo
efforts), and then they'll enter into the collective memory as "one
of those fairly good bands of the early 00's", only slightly less
memorable than Linkin Park (who are enjoying their time in the
spotlight a lot longer than i would have predicted).

"talent" is a matter of opinion. not sure if you're referring to my
cauldron, the song, or both, but it's still simply opinion. i hate
the music of Hanson, but when you consider how young they were when
they cut their first album, and the fact that they actually did play
their instruments (which is more than can be said for the Monkees),
they were pretty damn talented. (talent? yes. effort? plenty.
still crap? yup)

as for "effort", if you really need a play-by-play, here it is...
1) first i had to get the cauldron just right. i couldn't find any
decent clipart that wasn't more colorful than it needed to be or had
fuzzy edges that were just no good. i found that the "Woolbats" font
had a good cauldron as one of its characters, so then i had to create
a gif file of that character.
2) i had find the lyrics to the song, delete some redundancies, clean
up some typos, and eliminate all carriage returns.
3) using JavE to camelize it wasn't just a 3-second "click-click"
deal, i had to choose and tweak the settings, since the default
settings didn't satisfy me
4) diddling in EditPad wasn't all that difficult, but still needed
to be done.

do you think ppl shouldn't use JavE? it's kinda like Fruity Loops.
i know some ppl that download Fruity Loops, put about 10 minutes
effort into making a song, and the song actually sounds like something
from Fatboy Slim or Chemical Brothers, and suddenly they're on the
charts at mp3.com. on the other hand, some ppl have used FL to make
innovative, interesting, intelligent music. myself, i prefer to use
a real tracker, like Fast Tracker II (old school) or ModPlug Tracker
(windows equivalent, more user-friendly but stiil requires some actual
skill), but if someone uses FL and comes up with something original
(and good), i'm not going to reject it because it required "no effort"

Huh, not often that I see my ASCII art posted by someone else. :-o I just wonder why
the initials were taken off.

It's also weird how I drew that picture only a year or two ago, yet I feel I'd do it
so much better now.

That's just plain wrong! I copied the image and posted it to another
group for a person with "Tinkerbell" as a nym and was careful to
explain that I would normally provide the attribution, but there was
none given. I have since corrected the post attributing it to "Maija
Haavisto". Is this correct, or would you like me to change it? I
should also ask if you care whether it is even used elsewhere, when
given proper attribution?

Maybe "Bill Taylor" should learn to show more appreciation for the
artists who create such wonderful work.

Thank you Maija, I for one appreciate your fine work.

Nah, ASCII art can spread freely as long as the initials are kept. Mine is
"mh", like you can see in my sig. The original (pixel) picture was drawn
by a friend of mine and has been the "logo" of my homepages since 1998.
