In some football matches I've watched, the goalie won't touch the ball for 10-15 minutes at a stretch, possibly longer. And you forgot to mention all the games that end 0-0. Other than that...it's a great game.

I've played the major sports at the medium amateur level, men's inter-city basketball in Timmins/Noranda, Junior football (18 years old), and industrial league hockey. I've only kicked a soccer ball around a few times. There's no contest. Hockey players can only play for 30 to 90 seconds before needing a 5 minute rest, and they put fresh players out. It's the MOST physically taxing game there is. There's no coasting like in soccer. The speed and hitting is amazing even at the midget level, and if you want to have sports experience go see an NHL game. The sheer high speed skill and intensity is eye popping. Second, there's the two-line pass: when an attacker is beyond the center (red) line, and his teammate passes to him from behind his own blue line. But there's no "moving" line, as in soccer. The National Hockey League is considering eliminating the two-line pass rule. I think they should; the remaining offside rule is perfectly adequate by itself.

Canadians play ice hockey very well though so naturally as a fan I like it. It's also what I played as kid. It's all very nice, but what the hell is it doing on these newsgroups?

Doh - the point I'm driving at is that in order to skate you need /all/ the motor skills of walking plus a small handful of extra stuff! If football were easy, then the tiny handful of the worlds greatest players wouldn't command salaries in excess of 100,000 /week, because there'd be a huge number of them. The problem you seem to have is a fundamental lack of understanding about sport in general - all sports will be played to the limit of the player's capabilities. The more popular the sport, the higher the standard will be because more people will have access and will try it. The world's most popular sport is football. It is therefore most likely to be played to the full limits of human capability. It is therefore not somehow easy. I currently have an au-pair from Slovakia, a major power in Ice Hockey, with a population of less than 2 million. That should tell you something. I have a boatload of family in Canada, and am aware of the strong following for Ice-Hockey there. Football, however, is played seriously in around 200 countries. Just because Ice Hockey happens to be popular where you are does not make it even vaguely significant in terms of world sport - it's just not on the radar. I don't think either of the two sports are easy to excel at. Surely, anyone who can walk kan kick a ball and anyone who can skate can shoot a puck, to a degree. The hard part isn't learning either game, it's playing without having to even think about the basics. Both require stamina, concentration, endurance and incredible skill to play at any professional level. This is why both soccer and hockey players get paid ridiculous amounts of money to just change allegiance. This whole argument is silly.
