How odd..... that is an ASCII character-
And unfortunately, without them, some of the

I am not sure of any exact definition of ASCII
other than the original for teletype machines. :-)

: I've been under the impression that ASCII is universal.

It is a standard, but a large number of
users at colleges and large companies use unix
work stations and may use "tin", "nn", "rn",
etc. to read, and "vi", "pine" or "pico" to
write and reply to messages.
These programs just contain what the
author put in them, and may incluse or exclude
any ASCII number. I suppose there were many
keyboards that don't have the character, some
of my keyboards have it in different places,
if you are talking about the reverse single
quote mark.

: I don't recall this problem occuring before.
: Are there others who don't see the grave character ```````````?

The most frequent error I see is the TAB
character, it is not universal, and really messes
up an ASCII Art display.

: that would certainly influence those of us who
: make the ASCII art pics...

       Thank you very much. :-)

Sorry, the way I capture adds extra lines from the
online reader, and I have to delete them, I may have made
a mistake, I will be more careful.
ALT-096 seems to be invisible in Usenet text mode,
here is ALT-095 _ and here is ALT-096 ` which is
invisible (sorry, but a lot of things I do are invisible). :-)
I see a lot of talk about font types in notepad,
but on Usenet, a character is just an ASCII number between
32 and 126 (or whatever), and will display differently
in different readers (you probably see 096 above, I don't).
I am surprised that 96 decimal ASCII is invisible,
there must be a reason for it. There are a couple of
special characters on Usenet, including a substitute
ESCape character (I think), I try to avoid them, and
just use the "typewriter" keys.

Regards,

Joe Fischer

Actually, ASCII means every single character displayable in an MS-DOS
window. ANSI is the windows version. However, as in "ascii art," the
word ascii has grown to mean every character on the lower-left hand
side of the keyboard.

I found the problem, I had it configured to translate
character 96 to the ESCape character for either FIDO or
RIME art groups so I could get ANSI pixtures on line,
sorry. It was only supposed to translate if the next
character was [ though.

The printable characters are, so please go by
the ASCII-art FAQ, don't worry about me, just tell me
when I goofed. :-) I test ASCII art by going to
MSDOS prompt and using "TYPE filename.ext" to see what
the picture should look like.

You are nurgled. :op

Er, maybe I`m just not cut out for flaming - especially when I`m in such a
good mood!

The information you posted is innaccurate and may cause confusion. ANSI
isn`t anything windows specific. ASCII is totally non os-specific and ASCII
art is made using characters 32-127 in the ascii set missing out which ever
one is DEL. (I can`t remember that)

Please get your facts straight before posting, or include a disclamer,
simlar to the one I have included for my message.

I am in no way assuring anybody that my information is 100% accurate and
will not be held responsible for any deaths, chickens or electric shocks
resulting from use of my information. If you want to correct me, go ahead. I
don`t think I`m 100% right anyway. So there. :op

No, not quite ... it's nothing to do with MS-DOS windows, or corners of
the keyboard (there are several different kinds of keyboard, anyway).
Allow me to quote myself (:-) from the FAQ:
----
The ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange)
character set is a set of 128 characters (0 to 127) which are
standard on almost all types of computer. The only characters used
in ASCII art are those with the values 32 to 126, which are shown
below, and 13, which represents a carriage return (new line).
The other characters in the ASCII character set (0-12, 13-31, and
    127) are control codes for representing things such as `end of file'
and `backspace'; they should not be used in ASCII art.
