I really don't care who claims it >otherwise because I just try to have fun and share the entertainment >with others who have a good sense of humor, also. >-Shadow Excerpt from the FAQ for this news group: 10. Can I post or use other people's ASCII art? Don't assume that if somebody posts something to a newsgroup, that gives you the right to use it however you like; copyright laws still apply. For more information, see the article `Copyright Myths FAQ: 10 big myths about copyright explained' in news:news.announce.newusers. (It is also available at http://www.clari.net/brad/copymyths.html.) ASCII art is often an exception to this rule, though: generally, ASCII artists don't mind if you copy their pictures and repost them or put them on your own Web site for your personal use. There are a few important conditions, however. * If the picture contains a few letters in one corner which don't seem to be part of the picture, they're the artist's initials. DO NOT remove these initials -- would you cut away the part of a Van Gogh painting containing his name? Leaving the initials on is a small price to pay for being able to use the picture for free. * If you're going to use a picture in your signature file, or in a place (such as a log-in screen) which means you're going to be using it a lot, you should really e-mail the artist (or post to the newsgroup, if you don't know their address) and ask for permission, because otherwise people may get the mistaken impression that you were the one who drew the picture. As for posting other people's ASCII art, after a discussion in news:alt.ascii-art the following rules were agreed upon: 1. If an ASCII ART picture has initials on it, leave them on when posting it. 2. If an ASCII ART picture doesn't have initials on it, mention that you didn't draw it when posting it. 3. If somebody posts a picture without initials and you have an original copy with initials, feel free to repost the original version. The repost ought not to be taken personally, as we all know that ASCII art often loses proper credits. Responses to the repost are not necessary. Ok, since you evidently run an ASCII Gestapo service, you put whatever initials you believe belong on there, Mister. If you will take notice, I did not make a claim to the ASCIIs. They never had initials on them when I got them out of another news group a long time ago. Henceforth, I will put "artist unknown" on such. Gads! How picky do we get in this nosy news group anyway???? Sheeeeeezzzzzzzzzzz... And I am sure you have seen the castle before since I did it about 15 years ago. Now, if you want to dispute that, you go right ahead and make an ass out of yourself. I really don't care who claims it otherwise because I just try to have fun and share the entertainment with others who have a good sense of humor, also. -Shadow On 25 Nov 2001 03:10:47 GMT, mik...@bluedwarf.spam.net (MJP) wrote: >On Sun, 25 Nov 2001 00:09:33 GMT, sil...@s.ashadow (The Silent Shadow) wrote: > >um, you really should put JRO's initials back on that comic. > >and I dont know who's castle that was you posted earlier >but I have seen that before as well. >-- > _________________________________________________ > /| _____________________________________________ | > //| | _ _ _ _______ _____ | | > // | | | \/ \/ \\__ __\ _ \ .irc.bluedwarf.net.| | > //__| | | \ \ \_ \ \ __/ .www.bluedwarf.net.| | > \\ | | | \__\ \ \\ \ \ | | > \\ | | |_____\ \__\_____\___\ -=MikeChat=- | | > \\| |_____________________________________________| | > \|_________________________________________________|
OK, I thank you for being a gentleman. However, copyright is probably one of the most misunderstood "concepts" ever. It protects no one in and of itself. All it does is give a person who has filed and received a written document of copyright that the work has been registered with the federal authority. It then becomes valuable only if there is litigation. There is even a specified form that the copyright notice must take for it to be valid. Otherwise, it is legally meaningless to just claim something to be copyrighted, such as "All rights reserved," etc. I have used copyright laws in art, music composition, magazine articles, research papers and books that I have written in years past. Unless they have been changed, I think there is just a lot of wishful thinking about what copyright laws are meant to do in this news group. The greatest protection anyone can have for their work is to simply avoid placing it in the public domain altogether. -Shadown On 26 Nov 2001 04:36:14 GMT, mik...@bluedwarf.spam.net (MJP) wrote: >On Mon, 26 Nov 2001 04:44:57 GMT, sil...@a.ashadow (The Silent Shadow) wrote: > >> >>Ok, since you evidently run an ASCII Gestapo service, you put whatever >>initials you believe belong on there, Mister. Why don't you try doing something useful with your life, like swatting flies with your wagging tongue and flapping jaws. Or perhaps you could pretend to be the "Unknown artist" that I will post on any drawings I find without credit lines, henceforth. Sheeezzzzzzeeeeee... Man, time is short. No. Absolutely no copyright notice is required any more. It
automatically applies.

Publishing it does not place it in the public domain.

Yes, you could. Or you could keep picking your nose with your thumb up your butt, too, so you could draw attention to your missing link by waving your axe and screming that you qualify for an act with the Three Stoogies as one who believes he's gifted with a vitriolic legerdemain. But that might be a little too complicated for the drivel that you are best noted for. Go back to swatting flies where your talents for winning friends and influencing people can be best utilized. -Shadow On Tue, 27 Nov 2001 08:56:04 +0800, Bateau <Its...@Not-A-Real-Address.com> wrote: >____ On Mon, 26 Nov 2001 17:15:03 GMT >\__/___ The Silent Shadow ran through the > LI-\o-' streets of alt.ascii-art > | waving an axe and screaming: > / \ >>Why don't you try doing something useful with your life, like >>swatting flies with your wagging tongue and flapping jaws. >>Or perhaps you could pretend to be the "Unknown artist" that >>I will post on any drawings I find without credit lines, henceforth. >>Sheeezzzzzzeeeeee...
