I have not found any ascii art for HAL-9000's face. I have come up
with a 'rough draft' of HAL-9000, but I was never that good with
ascii. Could one of you artists maybe help make it look better, and
finish it? Or just start from scratch and do your own. It would be a
someone fun kindof project to say the least, since we all love
HAL-9000 :). I would imagin that his eye would be the hardest part to
make look good. But I have total trust in you artists, I have seen
some amazing things done by ya'll.

If you don't know what HAL-9000 looks like, here are some links to a
few pictures of him.. http://hal9000.inetstrat.com/hal/hal.jpg ,

Here is my rough draft of the ascii art. As you can tell, it's not
that great, but it's an idea.

Thanks for pointing the way to the pictures of Hal9000

It is a great start. Diddle a bit from your draft. The only thing
not liking is the nameplate somewhat unbalanced but when it is
evened up it throws everything else out. HAL9000 will work but looks
odd in the picture to me.

I Think that works a little better. It gets the timing down and makes
it seem as though the words are coming from HAL.

One day when I had a TV X2of3 was flipping through the channels and I
saw that 2001 was on. I told her to go back to that one because the
funny part was about to happen. She was mystified. She had seen the
movie but remembered no funny parts at all.

Well with the idea of it being comedy implanted in her head by me she
started laughing at "Can we talk Dave?" until HAL was shut down.

It is really funny when you think of it as a comedy. No seriously.

Thanks you guys for all of your creations. I am amazed. It's quite an
art to be able to make pictures out of numbers, letters and
symbols..Awesome....

I personally do not think the death of HAL should be seen as comedic.
Actually, I think its pretty sad. The part that's saddest to me is
when HAL has lost so much of his 'mind', he starts singing a song
'daisy'. The first thing HAL ever learned. Dave did the one thing that
HAL didn't like, take away his genius abilities. How anybody could
think it's funny that an emotionless(?) robot is begging for his life
is beyond me. Especially since the movie leaves us to wonder if HAL
really did have feelings or not.

Anyway, that's just my thought about it.

Thanks guys for the ascii!

He's not a robot.

Well, he's a device that uses heuristic programming to
control mechanical parts (such as the pod bay doors).
So why shouldn't he be a robot? He's just a *really*

A robot he is not in sense of a robot preforming a single
or multipule task for one device. A robotic computer
controlling other robotic devices or a single robot he is.
Brains vs Brawn, Employer vs Employee. Man vs Woman HAL
blew a fuse then short circuted.

Cause he has no arms or legs or laser cannons and he can't turn into a
truck.

That isn't a robot. Thats and Autobot.

I think for the purposes of the conversation though that if it has
arms and legs and is "aware" then it is an android. If just does
programmed mechanical things and isn't self learning then it is a
robot. If it is like HAL then it is a AI.

Androids are made to simulate human abilities. Robots are made to blow
shit up.
