midi+animations+synchronized sounds
alt.ascii-art
· 8 messages · 15 Feb 1998 - 23 Feb 1998
I just turned on some of the midi files on my website. About a year ago, I
needed to turn off pretty well all of the midi files, since versions 2.x of
Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer that were current at that time didn't
cope well with midi+animations, but versions 3.x and particularly versions 4.x
are able to cope with a lot more, i.e. they play midi+animations+synchronized
sounds quite well now (what a nice surprise!) Of course, having a reasonably
fast computer helps too! You may like the enhancements, see for example:

IE4 doesn't like something... whenever I try to scroll down on your page
(and only your page) it crashes so hard the cursor doesn't move... it
doesn't even beep when I push keys...

I've got IE 4.01 on a Win '95 OSR2 system with 64 megs of EDO RAM and an
AWE 64 Gold...memory doesn't seem to be the problem :) It's probably a
Java incompatibility, as you mentioned...
Keep up the good work, and maybe one day my computer will grant me
mercy... :D

>IE4 doesn't like something... whenever I try to scroll down on your page >(and only your page) it crashes so hard the cursor doesn't move... it >doesn't even beep when I push keys... Nevertheless, this is not necessarily IE4, it could be any of the myriad of computer configuration issues. A wild guess would be: you don't have enough RAM. There is basically nothing that I can do on my part. Same like the comment about not hearing the background music and/or the sound accentuations (such as the rooster) at the same time. If your computer is not equipped with two sound channels (like most Macs) or if your sound card is not able to mix two sound sources, then that's what will happen (or similar issue, I misplaced the comment, I just came back from a place where there is no Internet yet, I had a lot in my inbox and I also deleted a lot quite quickly.) And responding to yet other comments (that I may or may not have deleted), I am primarily publishing on the web (and not in newsgroups or email discussion groups.) The static comic strips on my website require the first generation of web browsers, i.e. versions 1.x of Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer. The movie clips in GIF require the second generation, and the interactive pieces in Java and Shockwave require the third generation of web browsers. I did not plan things that way BTW, I merely took advantage of the technological advancements of the publishing medium (i.e. the web) as they became available. In short, the more capable your computer is, the more you will see/hear/play on my website. And if that does not sound very nice to you, well, there are many, many, many websites designed that way (but do not state things as frankly as I have done.) Also, I realize very well, that the implementation levels of new web technologies can be quite dissimilar (worst of them all is Java VMs) but that has been my choice, the upside being that this allows for pushing the ascii envelope in ways that would not be possible otherwise. This also explains why I am not interested in Javascript at all, it does not allow you to push the ascii evelope beyond, for example, what has been possible with (the non-web technologies) VT100 or ANSI decades ago. True, Javascript as announced in this newsgroup (and published on the web, BTW) has definitely lots and lots of room for lots and lots more sophistication, I don't deny that either, but then, why use Javascript in the first place? Why not use Java in the first place? And that is (one of the things) that I have done, it allows you to go past previous confines ... ,, ( "> w The Original 'stein Gallery ,(> )>| http://members.aol.com/petecasso ( ^^ 'stein cartoons, 'stein games and more!

Look at me! I am high-tech! I am pushing the ASCII envelope. :-)

But that is indeed a minimum requirement for the computing platform. >It's probably a Java incompatibility, as you mentioned... >Keep up the good work, and maybe one day my computer will >grant me mercy... :D It can take a long time before a standard is accurately implemented. I discovered inaccurate implementation of gif89a in IE as recent as last year, 8 years after the standard has been published ... ,, ( "> Visit the peaceful gallery of the 'steins! ,(> )> http://members.aol.com/petecasso ( ^^ 'stein cartoons, 'stein games and more!
