On radio 4's 'Enquire Within' someone asked why Wales was not
represented on the Union Flag.  The reply was that the Cross of
St George was adopted as a national symbol by the Tudors, a
Welsh family, and hence it is the flag of Wales rather than
England.  It's a lot easier to draw than the above beastie, but not
nearly so good looking.  Anyhow the Union flag still has the cross
of Saint Patrick though the union with Ireland was dissolved in
1921, but not the red hand of Ulster.  So we need a dragon, a red
hand, and two crosses.  Or home rule for everyone.

I think that the more honest answer was that the union flag was made
by combining the flags of Scotland and England at the time of the
union of 1707.

Wales was not represented as it officialy did not exist.  We were
conquered remember!  The "Act of Union" incorporated Wales into
England, and although Wales retained some separate administative
stuctures and its own system of law courts it was regarded as a
province of England.

When Ireland was added to the union the cross of St Patrick was
added.  Perhaps if they are serious about the UK being a union of
equal consenting nations they should look again at the flag?
