Although I play the piano, I don't know what an alto clef is, you can tell
that my days of taking piano lessons are long, long, long gone. I just did
a search in Encarta and Microsoft Bookshelf, I found the term, but I found
no picture. Makes me wonder, did you or have you studied music? (just
rhetorical question). By the time you explain what it is you might have
drawn it already.

It's used for viola, some=20 choral arangements, and other various alto instruments. Though, you=20 may be reffering to a bass clef. This is the bottom line for piano (in=20 most cases, there's always the times when top switches to bass or=20 bottom switches to treble). It apears as a backwards "C" with a ":"=20 next to it. The alto clef is kinda hard to explain...it looks a little=20 like the standard deviation symbol in math, but thinner + a little=20 fancier.=20

Pete had a bass clef in his drawing. One of my colleagues recently likened reading the alto clef to being able to speak and read Urdu if English were your first language. :^D And to answer the rhetorical question, some of my colleagues would say categorically that I have not studied music at all, just because I insist on playing the viola. (And yes, I believe that is yet another viola joke. If you search the web, you can find pages and pages of viola jokes.)
