Why are ASCII pictures of shrek always so instantly recognizable? Most likely. They are after all the cheapest (PC priced) way to get
a lot of reliable (non-Windows) computing power for rendering.

it was! they had a cluster of about 50 I believe to process all the data - they used the extra power, not to reduce rendering time to get the film finished quicker, but they took the same time, and that's how they got the great look to it - similar story for final fantasy.
