How you imagine  GUI in ascii?

For example, try to draw alarm clock from http://www.brigsoft.com ;-)

with so many complex and tiny elements it would be hella difficult to
make an ascii gui if you can't change the on-screen font size... if
you can it would be managable IMO

too true, this for example is the rough outline of the GUI mentioned,
the GUI in THIS case left no room for the actual data due to the font restriction

by the time (no pun intended) you were able to input data
the thing would be quite a few times (no pun intended) this size.

You used to be able to get Visual Basic for DOS,
and could apparently draw ASCII character based
windows and suchlike.

No need to imagine it. Such UIs existed and were used on productive
computer systems only 10 years ago[1]. I have actually written such
programs professionally.

Damn that I do not have a screenshot from one.

it's not THAT far away - I'm 18 and I remember the days of the Amstrads and
Toshiba laptops :-p jeez, my first computer was a 1512 :-) and I made those
GUIs myself - out of batch files, 'cos I was still young and didn't know
alot back then - oh how things have changed - I still don't know anything
tho....

I suppose one could quibble that they weren't graphical in the sense
that they allowed bitmaps, but there were certainly many WIMP interfaces
around (well, maybe only WMP -- window, menu, pointing device/mouse; no
icons). Quite a few of them, on DOS at least, based on Borland's Turbo
Vision library; one could often tell from the interface if they had been
programmed with TV :).
