I was thinking DOS too much because that was what I grew up using. I have installed Redhat Linux and recently, I installed Mandrake 9 but I often screw it up somehow, and end up having to reformat the boxen. Well, two full Ascii text blocks, no wait, this makes up another, so this is the third ASCII block. What fun!

I find that you have to use the tag if you want the double space after the period. However, I now wonder if educators are even teaching the double space rule, which I learned in junior high school, but yet I don't recall it being taught in high school. now it seems like it is beginning to act like a open ended rule which you can use either way. While there are LOTS of handbooks and sets of guidelines on presentation style, they're a different thing from rules of grammar. Personally, I find the double-space after a full stop irritating and unnecessary, but I wouldn't even consider describing it as anything other than a personal preference. On the other hand,forgetting a [space] after a punctuation mark is almost as bad as TALKING IN ALL CAPITALS, and damaging as it renders the text more difficult to read. If I see text such as LongClassName.ObscureMemberName, however, I'll accept it as being in a different language to written English, and conform to the mandatory rules of that language. Do you think it could be a proportional vs. monotype font problem? An extra space on a monotype font may be unneeded, the space may be wide enough. But on a proportional font, I see the space isn't very wide, which brings a point which I recall the whole point of doublespacing was because, it was meant to signify the end of a thought. At least that was why it was why it was taught originally to me, but it might still differ in the types of documents that there is.

For scanning reasons. That double space leaves little doubt that there is a new sentence there. After years of having to pull scan books looking for something that I read in them 8 years ago I am often surprised that I can find the page I am looking for that has the exact quote I am looking for. After years of looking in books that I haven't read while scanning for information that I must have /now/ I find that the double space is a great boon in helping one find the old-thought-new-thought-boundary. Especially in old[0] texts where they were known for creating sentences that never ended. Those kinds of things can be very annoying to dyslexic people[1]. Scanning a few dozen pages at light speed while dyslexic is not the easiest of tasks.
