Do you think it could be a proportional vs. monotype font problem? An extra space on a monotype font may be unneeded, the space may be wide enough. But on a proportional font, I see the space isn't very wide, which brings a point which I recall the whole point of doublespacing was because, it was meant to signify the end of a thought. At least that was why it was why it was taught originally to me, but it might still differ in the types of documents that there is.
