By the way, nothing -FORCES- you to use images, "radio
buttons," etc. on a web site. A web site can be 100
per cent text, if you want it to be. In fact, an all-
text web site is a lot easier to design.
Just learn some HTML code, and write your own pages
with a text editor. Don't use those crappy "page
designer" programs; they suck.
Do a Google search (www.google.com) on "HTML tutorial."
You'll find lots of information.
One of the problems with an ASCII web site is that the
majority of people who visit the site will be using
WinDoze, Loonix, Mac X-crement, or some other kind of
gooey-based operating system.
And they'll be using a graphical browser which defaults
to a proportional font.
When ASCII art is rendered in a proportional font, it
looks like crap.
Even specifying the font type in your HTML code is no
guarantee that an ASCII site will render properly in
a graphical browser. Even the "Courier" font used by
some browsers is proportional.

Even the "Courier" font used by > some browsers is proportional. [some extremely important content] Hey, according to the w3c you can be sure that the font will be of fixed-width if you use something like
. If somebody has designed a browser that does not respect this standard then anybody who uses this piece of software does certainly not deserve to be able to view your webside... I agree: do NOT use anything like M$ Frontpage... Even real _good_ homepage designer software (is this thing called 'dreamweaver'?) is not meant to be used to build a pure ascii-art homepage. And another tip: I'd rather not use colours apart from b/w and w/b (in fact grey on black) in an ascii-art homepage for several reasons: * it looks somewhat cheap and filthy (at least I feel) * it is _hard_ to edit since you do not really see your picture anymore through all the tags... * is it ascii-art when it's coloured? Oh one more thing comes to my mind: have htmltidy or something similar to clean up your html and be extremely sure to substitute all <s and >s with the appropriate &thingy... obascii (i'm a bit out of shape): /| .-' '-=\ hmm... is it the salmon of doubt? <*_ _.-' or is it not the salmon of doubt? I don't know your real age, but I hope you are enough adult. If you need some inspiration, you can get it from Tran's website. http://www.asciiartfarts.com/ There holds a lot of great ascii-picture. You can watch various artists' picture in that site. It holds really various fine picture. From earlier era to recent era, you can surf instantly. You can learn how to express curve lines, materials, etc.... Some words are funny too.Though most has bad taste. Check it as your own risk! ;-) kirara

It has most of Tran's source pictures in unadulterated form, and it's indexed if you want a picture of something specific. Specifying a font type in your HTML code is a guarantee that an ascii site will NOT render properly in some graphical browsers. > > Even the "Courier" font used by > > some browsers is proportional. AFAIK Courier is Courier, period. Some people might not have a font called "Courier". Specifying a font is a bad idea. > Hey, according to the w3c you can be sure that the font will be of fixed-width > if you use something like
. No. Rather the opposite. CSS ("Stylesheets") is by definition only a *suggestion* which a browser can choose to ignore. Specifying a font with CSS that way is also a guarantee that some people will end up with a different font. > If somebody > has designed a browser that does not respect this standard then anybody who uses > this piece of software does certainly not deserve to be able to view your webside... If somebody has designed a web site that does not respect the user's right to turn CSS off then anybody who writes web pages that don't show up right doesn't deserve to have people reading his pages... To get ascii art to show up right in an html document you need to understand what the tags mean: * means "use a monospaced font". This will make the font right, but will treat the text the same way as other text (i.e. it will remove "extra" spaces and wrap the text). *
means "use a monospaced fonts and respect my formatting". It will preserve your spaces and newlines. This is what you should use for ascii art. In both and
the font used will be *a* monospaced font, but it doesn't say which one. It will simply use the one the browser is set to use (i.e. the reader's favourite). * means "use this font". It fails to work when the reader's computer doesn't have that font or if the browser is set to ignore fonts. * style means "I think this font is pretty and I suggest that you use it but I won't be offended if you choose some other font or ignore this suggestion completely". It's a very humble *suggestion* and only to be used for non-critical stuff (like colours on an ascii picture). Not suitable for *specifying* anything. Then you also need to "encode" all the & characters and < characters (or the browser may think that they are "active html code" instead of content). -- ##### c ^ OO /\\\\ ##### | /|\ `^^^^^^^%-- '||` | \\\\ ####-[.]\ / \ " " \ ha ha ha dd /[.]-\\\| ### _| |_ \\| ### (_ http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/cgi/asciichat/ _)} == \ / A S C I I A R T C H A T # ||\
