I use linux and am looking for a decent newsreader for KDE. If you know
of one please let me know.
At the moment I am using "Netscape Communicator" and I can not stand it.

I'm using Netscape as well.

Try going to the Linux section of http://www.tucows.com

Lets see...

  X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.61 [en] (X11; I; Linux 2.2.12-20 i686)

I agree that Netscape 4 sucks, try Netscape 3 instead. It doesn't try to
mix email and news and for me, on this system, it's better because it
doesn't eat quota...

Runs with KDE BUT: in 0.8.1B3 (latest release) it generates invalid
MSIDs (at least in certain configurations, it crashes sometimes, and
doesn't save the scorefile between sessions - for the moment I would
rather suggest KNode as a 'standin'. Although I personally am looking
forward to a _really_ usable version of pan - shows lots of promise
IMHO. - Oh Yeah! Did I mention that it seems to randomly generate memory
floods on my machine? :-/

Another possibility would be gnus. Newer Versions seem quite powerful,
but the configuration is somewhat intimidating to an EMACS-Novice (like
myself :-))...

Not to mention that hilarious impossibility of generating correct
.sig-delimiters - or is that fixed by now? And the half-minute or so
startup time - and the frequent crashes - and... Well: Communicator is
_definetly_ not for mail/news. I think a great many people will agree on
that.

If it really should be a graphical one you should give pan a try. It's
gtk based but that shouldn't be much of a problem even with KDE.

If you are on the other hand searching for a real powerful newsreader,
you should really give slrn a try - it's worth the first maybe hard days
finding the right keys (it's text based, but it has also online help for
the default key bindings, and there is a really good documented .slrnrc
within the package).

Although version number is currently 0.9.6.2, it is not really unstable
but still not really the thing the author wants (although it is already
_loaded_ with features and can be easily extended with a scripting
language!).

> At the moment I am using "Netscape Communicator" and I can not stand it.

Read my signature :-) I fully agree to it - e.g. NC still can't read
messages with MIDs longer than aproximately 100 characters, which is not
even the half the RFCs requests to be able to use.

 Have fun!

gnus can never be a posibility. It's emacs - that should say it all
;-) I'd really say you should give slrn a try. It isn't sticked to a
certain editor, you know.

> Not to mention that hilarious impossibility of generating correct

Well, it's fixed if you use the plain-text editor, which is _not_ the
default, for some versions at least. The missing of the trailing space
is a lost in the convertion from html back to plain-text when you use
the html-editor, to my knowledge.

I know people that agree to it and still use it... *shrugs*

Anyway, I still can only encourage everyone to give slrn a try.
There's a win32-binary also, you know. If you need any help (I just can
repeat myself ;) with it, feel free to ask me. I once offered to write
a howto for slrn on win32 and got it even quite ready, but then I found
one linked from the slrn-homepage[1] so I droped that tutorial.

Fatal Error: Found [MS-Windows] System -> Repartitioning Disk for Linux...
(By cbb...@io.org, Christopher Browne)

I would like to second all of that
i use slrn for all of my nntp needs except the ones with multi part binaries
althow there is a patch for multi part binaries i just havent goten around to it

i have used slrn on nix as well as on win32
and i have never crashed which is far more than i can say for
netscrap outlook or krn

and the ability to use slrnpull to automate the whole thing is very much nice
for short lived nnpt servers or those with low bandwidth

No patch? slrn works with multi part binaries quite well. You just
have to mark all the messages with # and then press : to download it.
You will be asked if you want to decode the message (that's where you
should say yes) and afterwards delete the downloaded messages (I think
yes is useful here in most cases). No problem at all :-)

Yep. And especially to read and write messages offline, like me on a
notebook wherever I find the time to :-)

> --(Once apon a time, in alt.ascii-art,)--
> --(Gerfried Fuchs said it like only they can.)--

*nirg* Please, refrain from adding the whole previous message to the
end of yours. If it is needed to read the previous there is a
References: Header for that, or you can quote the part _above_ the piece
where you take reference to...

Also I think the character you use for quoting one's message is quite
broken. As stated in son-of-1036 you are very encouraged to use > for
that and no other characters. Some newsreaders can reformat long lines
and do other different stuff upon that. Your non-standard character for
quotes ruins that functions.... (like the " someone else is using ;-P )

 Have much fun!
Alfie
