rattlers - another simple animated typogram for Web browser status bar

'rattlers' is  a simple  program-generated  animated  typogram  for the 
narrow and  cramped confines  of the  one-line world of the Web browser 
status bar.

Wonderful! Especially since it is in SUCH a confined space! I will
definitely have to examine the source code to see how it's done!

Did you play the color clip of the full-screen version of the aquarium?

Unfortunately, it takes several minutes to load even with the compressed 
file so please be patient.  (An equipment upgrade is in the works.)

I think I won't be fishing any more....

I just assumed that I wouldn't be able to see the colour version. I surf
the net using the antiquated Netscape Navigator 3.04. But I just gave it
a shot (you're not kidding when you say that it takes a while to load)
and it's very cool!!! Is the black background supposed to be there all
the time? It kept disappearing and would only fill in if a fish swam
through. And every time I scrolled, I lost the black except where a fish
was swimming.

I tried looking at it in Opera3.60 but Opera crashed. I also looked at
it in MSIE3 (hahahahahaha for no good reason, we're VERY reluctant to
move past version 3s) and it looked the same with the black background
disappearing and filling in as a fish or bubble moved by. MSIE3 was much
happier dealing with the Java than Netscape was although the applet
suddenly and inexplicably stopped. (Is it on a time limit?)

But back to the status bar animation. If I alter the one line aquarium
to have different creatures (not fish) and put it on a web page, would
that be all right? On the body of the page, I would put:

The presentation applet  is a work in progress.   I am still working on
ways  to  efficiently refresh  the screen.   If  your  screen  with the
browser  opened to full-screen cannot show the whole  animation so that
you do not have to scroll, I can add a second link to the aquarium page
to use  a smaller font size in the  display.  Though you will lose some
detail and it won't speed up the download, as long as you don't overlay
the browser window  with  another window or scroll it off while you are
running the animation, the background will remain intact.

Check out the 'spinWeb' animation link that I posted recently.  It uses 
a reduced fontsize  with the same applet,  repeats the  animation,  and 
you should have no problems viewing it with your setup.

I use NetScape 3.0 running the  ancient  JDK 1.0.2  to develop and view
which is why you were able to view it.  I avoid the latest versions and
try  to   develop  tools   for  the  broadest   range  of  users--    a
characteristic common to ASCII artists, I believe.  ;-D

JDK 1.0.2  is the  same as  Opera, I  think, so I don't know  why Opera
crashes.

The animation stops  because it reached  the end of the 42K  compressed
file it  downloaded.   The Java  applet is  not actually generating the
animation, it is playing a clip of a  file generated,  in this case, by
the ASCII Aquarium Perl  script which I have used in the past as a sort
of poor-man's screensaver.   Hopefully, when  I finish with the applet,
you will be able  to use it to run  and display on a Web page  *any* of
the many old VT100/ANSI animation .vt or .ans files archived around the
Internet.  That is my objective.

Looking  at your site,  you seem to be *very* sensitive  to  creditting
issues as am I.  But to  avoid  any misunderstandings, just email me at
god...@bellsouth.net the  URL  when you  get things ready so I can see
what you have  in mind.  For one  thing,  I  will  want  to give  you a
special copyright link instead of the above.  Also, I  may want to make
a suggestion or two  about how to credit you  for  the  changes  in the
script itself.
