More time than not, all ascii art looks awful and distorted (read as, looks like crap, but I didn't say it ;) using a proportional spaced font and I think that most artists (myself included) don't consciously think about what it would look like on anything else other than a monospaced (DOS) font. There are ways of planning for it if you do want to use a proportional font for whatever reason such as using the letter which would have the same width and size (mostly uppercase, excluding letters like I, J, and other such thin letters; lowercase has to much variability to it). For me, just keep me in a monospaced font on my computer and that's all that I need... *grin* Those other people just have to learn to survive... -- Daniel P.S. The sig below looks best using a monospaced DOS font, white on black, (looks ridiculous on a Mac, and just awful on windows...)
