Wow, I had no idea I had the power to stun people. I guess the
joy of making it shined through a bit. I wonder if it's the first
case of obfuscating code as opposed to obfuscated code? Hmm.. :\

Yep, thought of that one day in Veronica's chat. Mine looked
like this though (IIRC):

 Nerdboy

I think that's part of where the idea for this episode came
from. The other part came from when I started working on the
upcoming strip rating system for the Nerd Boy website, when
I stumbled upon the mysql_select_db() function. :)

Very fun i imagine. This is one of those strips that sticks out in the
mind when one peruses the back issues. Kind of like the issue of The
NAM with Captain America in it or the Arabian Nights story in Sandman.
In any long running series heir is always that lone part that is
so different than the rest that it would be out of place in a small
series but yet in a larger run it becomes peoples personal favorite.

/* This is going to make a lot more sence to *nix users then it will
to windows users. People who automate everything under the sun should
understand all of it. I am one of those people and I need a job. I
will replace people with shell scripts for a small fee. */

It is a custom script that feeds off another custom script.

First I needed a way to have music started at 8AM every day.
So I wrote one with lots of bells and whistles to handle that.
The rewrite will have lots more bells and whistles and borderline on
the overblown. But then most of my custom stuff does that. I think
my autopr0n.sh and its "suit" of apps is a prime example of that.

Then I decided that I wanted to make sigs out of what ever was
playing so I added one line of code that takes all the songs that are
going to play and puts them in a file called ~/.playing.

Then via crontab the following script is called. It has 3 bugs in it
that I have found so far:
     1) if you catch the first song Rev and Now will be listed as
	    the same
     2) if you catch the last song Now and Fwd will be listed as
            the same
These two could be fixed very easily if I put in an extra
if loop but just haven't done it yet.
     3) I haven't debugged so that grep quotes the string in
~/.playing its looking for so it chokes if it goes looking
	    for something like "Once_In_A_While_[Ava_Adore_1998].mp3"
because [ and ] have special meaning in regexs. I will
	    fix this in the rewrite.

The whole "suit" of apps that make this happen really needs to be
rewritten but I haven't gotten around to that yet. But I started. =)

Personal favourite? Who's personal favourite? Seriously though, I think
this episode pretty much sums up what Nerd Boy is; just a wacky experiment
thought up by a bored programmer. Also, it's like a puzzle; move this bit
around and then this will fit here... That's how I make all of the Nerd
Boy strips, except the puzzle parts are my ideas or things I've heard or
read on some news site. It's also how I work in JavE.

OK. I'm not sure it even exists here in Sweden. I've only heard about
it on American sit-coms. Oh, and in that Simpsons episode where he
walks by outside their window. And wasn't there some kind of reference

I only briefly experienced LSL 1, but I have tried (and failed) to get
through its predecessor - "Softcore Porn Adventure", a text adventure, still
available on the Interactive Fiction Archive (http://www.ifarchive.org) for
all to play.

That's as close as I suspect you can really get with ASCII art that size.

Round glasses, funny hat, striped jumper... All you need now is his magic
stick and his dog (called, appropriately, "Woof").

Heard about it and heard that they were nearly identical, save for the fact
that one actually had graphics, but haven't tried the original text version.
We had LSL1 on our 186, so I played that when I wasn't writing silly GWBASIC

In LSL7: Love For Sail at least, but it isn't called "where's waldo?"
- it's "where's dildo(tm)?" ;-)

Not quite; the graphical adventure was a point-and-click affair, with a
different sense of humour and style. But the main idea was the same - go

Well, going by the use of Fuzzy Logic, anything with "Fuzzy" in front of it
must be good, therefore, fuzzylogically, a fuzzy memory must be a good
memory.

Wouldn't YOU like to know ? <nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more !>

Nah; it's what he used to move around the place (in the TV show anyway).
It's what Oddlaw was after all the time (he was the bad guy, with the black
and yellow striped jumper).

Umm, "skrev i meddelandet" means exactly the same as "wrote in
message".

I kinda figured that - I just find the concept of things like "Start" and
"Wrote in message" etc being different in other countries interesting...

I went to Indonesia this year for the 2nd time, and I didn't see one Windows
machine that wasn't in English... :o/

Not point-and-click. It was "walk around using the numpad and type commands",
like all the early Sierra adventures. I read up on it, and according to this
they are indeed a bit different:
http://abandonrom.tagalaxy.net/leisuresuitlarry.shtml

I played some of it on this page:

Couldn't get past the pimp. In LSL1, one just turns on the TV with the remote,
but in this one the pimp won't let me... :\ Oh well.

I don't know if I pronounced it properly either...

Do I pronounce it "Skrev eye medal-andet", or "Skrev ee medal-andet" or am I
going completely wrong ?

Hmm... The version of LSL was on the Amiga. I can't be certain it was
LSL1, actually, thinking about it. I was certain the one I played was a
point-and-click in the vein of Monkey Island (damn cool games, too).

>Woah.. I have no idea what you're talking about.

There was a television series of "Where's Wally" in the UK. Very weird.

Wally and his dog Woof go about the place helping Wizard WhiteBeard (I think
that was his name) solve mysteries and riddles.

To go from timezone to timezone and place to place, Wally uses this magic
stick / cane (not a wand, as I recall).

Oddlaw was the bad guy. He looked just like Wally, except that he wore a
yellow and black striped jumper as opposed to Wally's Red and White striped
one. Anyway, he wanted that stick real bad. He could do all sorts of cool
evil things with it.

He never got it, naturally - but always ended up getting hit with stuff.

At several points during the program, Wally goes missing, and someone says
"Where's Wally?" and the screen zooms out to a regular confusing drawing,
like you get in the "Where's Wally?" / "Where's Waldo?" books, and you get
one minute to find Wally in the picture.

Actually finding Wally has nothing to do with the plot of each episode -
it's just fun :o)

"Skrev ee MEH-DElandet", kind of. It's not really a double "d", it's actually
the two words "med" ("with") and "delande" ("distributing") joined to form the
new word "med-delande". Ugh, it's really hard to explain pronounciation using
just the written word.

Oh yeah. Monkey Island rocks. Except for the last game.

"So.. what's it like, then?" So obvious MPFC reference I didn't feel I had
to remark on it, that's all. :)

There is also a point-and-click version of LSL1.

_.--- The Unknown Artist spoke in alt.ascii-art --------._

So here I am reading my email and someone on one of the mailing lists
says she wants to take a picture visulizeing the phrase "cock-block".
She offers a few ideas on how she might accomplish this and then I
remember this ua post:

> \ _____
> ##### ((( `\
> #### _\_ _ _`\ )
> ##=-[o]o] (^ ) )
> #( _\ ~-( )
> # \__| ,-'((,,,))
> \ _/ ,- \_/ `\
>                    .-'==='-.      (          ,  |

from earlier in the day and I end up sending a reply like this:

And sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. Her is just one of
3 odd situations with women from last night.

So you came out this week despite
me bringing you to tears last week
when in my interrogation I brought Well I needed to get out
up how your insecurity and of the house and you were
unwillingness to tell your faience of course right. But do

Don't even get me started about the girl I found pictures of on the
net. Or trying to fend off another girl because you should never
sleep with anyone who has had more to drink than you.

And for tonight I am off to a pre-Halloween party. Need to pull out
the armor and the kilt. I really should get a job.

I only did that once. But thats a story for another day.

So how about last night:

Well its not even midnight yet
and the strobe lights you put up
between units 3 and C have
    vanished. The cotton spider webs
between units 1 and C are working
    their way towards becoming a
fire hazard when Vato Loco gets
ready to light that light that
cig he has had in his hand for 7
    minutes. Tigger managed to stay
out of a fight. And at least 70
people have shown up so far. So
all in all a good party.

That makes two people in a row for me. In another group someone was
also inspired by another trick of automation and said they where going
to look into finding a way to do some fun stuff.
