You should certainly look at Joan Stark's material, and talk to Colin Douthwaite about history. You ask how it is made: nearly always with a simple text editor, not with special tools. Automatic conversion from GIF to ascii performs very poorly....usually only as a starting point to redraw over. I don't know whether anyone has put together a manual of technique (perhaps you should?). There are several broad categories though. You might divide them by the amount of contrast and anti-aliasing, from uniform blocks ######## ############### .... to heavy material .o8888888o. 'o....... At that point I didnt know what they were called so it was tough looking for them. I finally found the listing on Yahoo and since then I became a fan. I like being able to draw something. I am hopeless with pen and ink but here I can create in on the keyboard. Kind of funny considering I freelance write and create on the keyboard in that way too.
