  Since I came on the Internet....I was interested in the story

  This has been discussed before. Pictures have been created
  for lineprinters, before that for teletypes, before that
  for typewriters (more difficult because you had to type it
  right without editing).  It is part of the more general
  tradition of making pictures from a mosaic of found objects;
  letter shapes being only one possibility.

  You ask how it is made: nearly always with a simple text
  editor, not with special tools.  Automatic conversion
  from GIF to ascii performs very poorly....usually only 
  as a starting point to redraw over.

  I don't know whether anyone has put together a manual
  of technique (perhaps you should?).   There are several
  broad categories though.  You might divide them by
  the amount of contrast and anti-aliasing, from
