Of all chess pieces I never really understood the
castle (rock, tower, ?). It can move very fast and
usually looks like a big tower. What's the trick?

Is it pushing a 'battle-sized' one :

                      _.
                      ~|
                  (( uuuuu
                     |_#-|
                ( O__| _#|
                 / Z_|_ -|
                / ( | - |
            ( (/\| /_- _\ a:f
               b b'(*)-(*)`

Or are we thinking of very agile buildings like

           Carl the hopping tower :

                       ._
                       |~ -.
                     uuuuu `
                     |_ -| -.
                     | _#|
                  _ |# -|-.
           |_| _ |_| | - | HOP .

                     (__.'_ / \/ hop
                           `. "
                           `"' a:f
                    .a88P'

Does anybody else here have a copy of Battle Chess?

The rooks transform into giant monstors, which walk around, and then
turn back into castles.

Hmmm... I need to make an JS ASCII animation of it.... Nah, I'll
leave it to someone else....

as i understand it power in chess is only represented by movement, so a
castle, being the most powerful needed to be the most mobile.
in the 'original'* game the bishops (advisors) only move one square
diagonally. the queen moved one square in any direction, like the
king. knights were elephants which were hard to control in battle, thus
their 'erratic' movement. thus the castle was the most powerful.

or maybe it's got to do with the monty python 'house hunter's' sketch.

*i think that it's been decided that the version i read about and am
refering to as the 'original' was found not to be...
