Etiquette in this newsgroup is to identify the artist when possible. As an ASCII artist, it is assumed that whatever you post is your work, unless you attribute it to someone else. You must consider yourself to be an ASCII artist... you create original work... therefore people will attribute your posts to you unless you tell them otherwise. Not to do so is misleading.

The thing is, that it was *not* me who posted the collection that began
this thread, a certain rsm...@aol.com (RSmith5039) did that without my
knowledge. I obviously can't police the Internet, even Bill Gates can't,
so I don't even try.

>Hey, what's wrong with collecting?

You misquoted me by taking out the crucial part out of my statement. The
complete statement says that some people make unqualified statements about
things that they are ill equipped for to judge.

>Why must you be so negative?

I am not negative, I am merely reacting to ongoing harassment.

You approached me to work together, I put forward my conditions for a
joint project, you took offense, insulted me (and praised me at the same
time, for that matter), I cut off all connections on my end, and asked you

I guess you are aiming that comment to me.
I can hereby inform you that I have produced art myself.
Not much, but a bit.

And about collecting:
If no one took care of the art, where would it end up?
Lost forever.

Where would all the art go if we didn't have art-galleries?

Shut up with your idiotic remarks and get a life.

Can I play, too? OK: What makes an artist?

(1) An artist is someone who says "I am an artist".
(2) An artist is someone who has a certificate from an art school.
(3) An artist is someone who is acknowleged by others as an artist.

Think about it.

We are not put on this earth to judge... people know what they like and
what they don't like- that is their opinion and they are entitled to it.
Opinions are neither right nor wrong. As adults, we should respect that.

This is *not* harassment. If you think it is, you are very naive for this
world.
This newsgroup is an open forum- You cannot dictate what people write nor
can you dictate who can write. I responded to this post :

>I notice that some people can only collect other people's work, they can

I disagree with its content- I would've responded to this had anyone else
posted it. Imagine how dull this newsgroup would be without the ASCII art
collectors, requestors, and commentators... All people have just as
much right to USENET. As for "unqualified comments"- just _who_ is the
expert at ASCII art? Who is qualified???

I'm guessing that you may be bombarded with email by those people who
collect the ASCII art.... And they feel the same way as I do.

And some people collect a lot and create occasionally (like me).

Hey, what's wrong with collecting? This is not an alt.ascii-ARTIST newsgroup.
It's for everyone interested in ASCII art, regardless if they can produce it themselves.
Why must you be so negative?

***SPUNK***

Gee, I did not realize that I am being honored with so much religious
zeal: being credited with other people's work, with other people's
posting, and now with other people's words ... along with the promise of
getting more of these honors ...

Well, I do not claim to be unbribable, one day I might cash in all the

In order to _become_ an artist you must practise, and practise, and
practise... and show your work to others... and discuss your work with
others... and I feel that that is what this group is for... (If you only
want the work of the masters - go to their homepages where they have
personal exhibitions...)

Here we go again - defining words by other undefined words.
But the question still is: Does it suffice to *claim* to do these things?
Or is there a definite way to judge upon this? What *is* art?
And what makes a person an artist? Can a computer judge upon this?

Followup-To: alt.philosophy.blah.blah.blah

My point: Anyone who calls himself an artist (whether by typing ASCII pics or
some other kind of art) might as well say "I am cool". Which is very uncool.

Stop griping, though - just post some ASCII pics here and be done with.

I think there's a valid point. There's a fine
difference - there are posts were a very simple
ascii picture is included and the author calls
him/herself an artist.. that makes me go hmmm..
But don't listen to me. I think that 99% of
people calling themselves artists are fakes
who make up fine reasons of superiority to
explain their noise (nuffing wrong about that)
where it's just about fun (nuffing wrong about
that either).

Nicely stated, Veronica. Having been a professional artist/designer for
over 30 years, I view "artists" as 1) learning, 2) competant, 3)
accomplished, and 4) vulgar copycats. I would rather view the simple
renderings of a new "artist" than the plagiarized, reworked offerings of
copycats, no matter how talented they may be at their craft.

Me again. Does anyone have a MIDI file with devil grunts or similar? I
plan to make a little movie to put on my webpage. Paul Wilkins and the

Ok Guys,(damn, my gender bias is showing!)

OK Persons of indeterminate and irrelevant-anyway gender,

For my money llizard IS an artist, and way cool......

So, here's the question:

My nickname, for reasons I'd rather not go into, is DogFish!

How about coming up with a grouse sig ascii pic for that?

Much appreciated,

Cheers,

Haha! Another idea that I could incorporate into the movie, Grandpa
Devilstein's singing must be quite mighty though, to tumble walls. I had
no luck sofar with a devillishly sounding MIDI (everything I found sofar
sounds too musical), so any sound format will do, perhaps a sound clip
from Godzilla or similar, as long as the file size is not too gigantic.

Well, at the risk of being seared beyond recognition by all of Spunk's
supporters who won't finish reading this because they are having an apoplectic
fit from the first part, the deer is a good copy of someone else's art. So are
you an artist judging by that? I'm not so sure. However, judging by the
following (only a very few of many, many, many from which to choose), which I
gather are original, yes, I'd say that they are art and you are an artist.

The original is also created by her, she just added some new spots.

Well, my idea is that of a fun chase all over the screen, Birdstein does
not get hurt, with Grandpa Devilstein uttering the grunts.

And no, I won't put orgasm grunts into that movie either, as someone else
suggested, to keep the Internet safe for kids :-)

Refer to my movies and multimedia web pages to see things that I like to
create.

The only song that I know of with that sort of idea is Serpentry
(k_serpe.s3m) which can be found at The Hornet Archive.
http://www.hornet.org
Serpentry has some samples of a woman making sounds of frustration and
yells of displeasure..

You could also do a search there for words like devil, etc.. but this isn't
midi,is it.

YES! I'm actually agreeing with Sven!!!

My answer to your question is no, claiming that you do something does not
suffice. There has to be some affirmation of your abilities or
capabilities. If you claimed to be a sprinter, you would have to provide
examples of your speed (ie, your time). But as for art, that relies upon
how someone views your work-- it is completely subjective. Right now the
only analogy that I can come up with is gymnastics or diving. Scores are
given based upon performance and aesthetic value. Judges are qualifed by
being certified in their area of expertise. As for ASCII art, there are
no certifications or qualifications (none that I know of, at least).
There are art degrees. But I wonder if ASCII is considered a valid
medium... Jon Melusky and I discussed this once... he is an art major.
Perhaps he can add to this discussion...

And now some new art as Sven requested...

Er, Walt Disney animators created Bambi... Llizard's right, I just made a likeness of the animal. If I had been the one who came up with Bambi for good ol' Walt, I doubt that I would be sitting here at my computer doodling around with ASCII characters! <g>

How about this? I'm a good copy-cat? :)

Well, actually Erik, I think he was referring to the original being
drawn by an animator at Disney. Now I don't actually *know*, but
I don't think that was her. :^)

However, she is very, very good. And the improvements are amazing
since her first posts. Joan, you just keep getting better. :^)
Thanks, for the art work.

Sandy

And I'm a big fan of llizard! Llizard can do amazing things with the small stuff which is harder than the larger pics. She also does great JavaScript animations! :)

Currently DogFish's bark is worse than his bite.
