Tools For ASCII Art

I'm interested in tools, too.  I'd like to take drawings that I have with text
in them, and be able to delete the text and write new stuff without all the
work.  The other things mentioned above would be cool, too.  I'm mainly looking
for Unix stuff, though.  Thanks!

I think one reason why bandwidth on this group is doomed, in the near term, 
is that the f*****g art takes too long to create-- because there's no good
tools-- so we're already running out of new images.

This goes quintuple for ANSI animations-- the potential is hugely exciting
to me, but I simply can't take the required time to experiment by hand.

So I propose we put our heads together and create some simple C-code that
can easily be ported to *every* platform (hey, it's just text!), and then
add features to our hearts' content...

But rather than hogging the bandwidth here, I invite interested parties to 
rendezvous over on comp.text, which is a relatively quiet-and-appropriate
group, at least for starters.  (I think Ascii windowing can be included,
too, and we can reasonably argue that what we're doing will grow into an
integrated text/ascii-graphics editor...)
