<LURK MODE OFF>

I've long been a fan and admirer of ascii-art (going back to
typewriter-art days), though I've never had the opportunity (or patience)
to figure it out and do it myself. I admire you guys and gals for what you
do.

I want to respect your work, and I do keep your initials on any ascii-art
I reuse. However, sometimes I use a piece of ascii-art that had no
attribution on it when I got it, such as this hug (which I did diddle to
include my glasses and beard);

       ___ .~~~~ . ___
  ____( \ /________\ / )____
 (____     \_____       / |(@||@)| \       ______/     ____)
(____ A HUG FOR U`-----( > )-----'A HUG FOR U ____)
 (____ _____________@@ .___. @@______________ ____)
   (______/ @@@.____.@@@ \______)
                         @@@@@@@@@@
                          @@@@@@@@

(View this in a monospaced font like Courier New or else
you'll think this is a Picasso instead of a hug!)

I don't want to be known as someone who doesn't respect ascii-artists (I'm
in awe of a lot of the stuff you do), so here's my question (and I have
just read the FAQ);

Has there ever been a discussion of a simple way to indicate that a piece
of ascii-art is from an unknown source? The FAQ states, "If an ASCII ART
picture doesn't have initials on it, mention that you didn't draw it when
posting it". Could there (as a simple alternative) be a standard code or
initials to do that instead? I know I'm not going to be putting "I didn't
draw this and don't know who did" every time I use a piece of unattributed
ascii art. Things I was thinking about might include:

UNK : UNKnown source.
#AU# : Artist unknown. The "#" characters would highlight that it was not
someone with the initials "AU" who did the artwork.
*U* : again, Unknown source.
#NBM# : Not By Me
UNATTR : UNATTRibuted; artist unknown.

My hug might then appear as:

       ___ .~~~~ . ___
  ____( \ /________\ / )____
 (____     \_____       / |(@||@)| \       ______/     ____)
(____ A HUG FOR U`-----( > )-----'A HUG FOR U ____)
 (____ _____________@@ .___. @@______________ ____)
   (______/ @@@.____.@@@ #AU# \______)
                         @@@@@@@@@@
                          @@@@@@@@

(View this in a monospaced font like Courier New or else
you'll think this is a Picasso instead of a hug!)

And if someone KNEW who the artist was, they could let me know or if I
found an attributed version later, I'd just need to change the #AU# to
JGS, VK, or whoever created it.

I was thinking of this particularly this morning; I was on Veronica's
site, and she had some art on her "oldest" page that she didn't even
attribute (which I added before saving). Also, I found some ascii-art of
spiderwebs (which is the main thing I was looking for), and more than half
of them were unattributed. I'm getting ready to make a header for a
personal newsletter called "Webb-Spinnings", and I was looking for
spiderwebs, naturally.

I'd like to see some discussion on this subject, and hopefully a
"standard" code emerging (which could be added to the FAQ) that, among
other things, I can use on my "Webb-Spinnings" header to indicate that I
respect giving ascii-artists credit for their work, even when I don't know
who did it.

OBASCII:

FYI, this is the closest I've gotten to doing my own ascii-art; it's the
original header for an e-newsletter I was sending out to people while my
son was fighting his cancer battle;

the First Lady of Ascii Art (Joan Stark) if she could help with another

which included this; she didn't claim any credit, but I gave her credit in
the newsletter).

this sure is a great idea... i kinda like it.. not your particular
suggestions but the idea of marking unattributed ascii art to
distinguish it from "self made free for use" ascii art :)

i think there will be discussed about it and maybe a new standard will
emerge :) it's definitely a thing to spend some thought on

hmm I do like -=NBM=- (not by me) or -UNK- though either *could* be a sig too.

My thought is that once a generally agreed-upon indicator (perhaps two or
three to cover the possibility you mentioned) was settled on and put in
the FAQ (and maybe the pointer, too?), anyone who was already using the
indicator as a sig would have a chance to speak up. If someone did, then
we'd know and fall back to the other(s). We could even set a date (say,
May 1--I thought about April 1 but since that's April Fool's Day...) to
give someone time to speak up and say "I use that already!" or "I know
someone who uses that one!" After the date chosen, it would BE the
alt.ascii-art indicator for unattributed ascii-art, and it would be up to
the artist to change his/her form of attributing their artwork to avoid
confusion. Four or more letters could minimize that risk, too;

^QAA-A^ = "Query Alt.Ascii-Art" to find the artist.
*RHIUDT* = "Raise Hand If You Did This"
!ANSU! = "Attribution Needed: Speak Up!"
+AUSU+ = "Artist Unknown: Speak Up!"
?DUDT? = "Did U Do This?"
~IRAAAU~ = "I Respect Ascii-Artists: Artist Unknown"
(FISAU) = "Fill In Space: Artist Unknown"

I think you and I agree at least that putting symbols before and after the
letters could help highlight that the letters are not initials but are an
indicator that the letters relate to the clip being unattributed.

Or the indicator could be all symbols;
[***] = Like a password field; it's unknown what's behind the asterisks.

I'm not as concerned about WHAT the indicator is (these are just some
examples) as I am that there BE one; simple and easy to remember so that
others would recognize it as such. That would help distinguish who is
intentionally stripping attributions and who is innocently using
unattributed ascii-art, not knowing who the artist is.

BTW, Hope you like my "Picasso" footer to my ASCII-Art postings; I think
it *has* minimized some confusion.

I had another thought along similar lines to float; with all the diddling
that goes on, someone with a good diddle of another's original should be
given credit too. Take the example I gave of my crude effort at making a
"James Report" header (see my first post). Proper credit could be given by
an initial set like MW/jgs. I don't think putting EVERY diddler would
work; sigs as big as the artwork (MW/jgs/VK/MGP/LV/aa/lgb/SO would be
getting ridiculous), just the most recent diddler (and MAYBE a
particularly exceptional intermediate diddler) would suffice. So
MW/jgs/VK/MGP/LV/aa/lgb/SO would simply be MW/SO. I offer this for your
consideration as well.

unknown

I can't imagine anything else being as easy to remember and recognize even

This is a good idea, but long acronyms with random letters are usually difficult to
remember (from personal experience). So, my suggestion is using acronyms that resemble
words:

OANI - ORIGINAL ARTIST NOT IDENTIFIED
SITIY - SAY IF THIS IS YOURS
IDDI - I DIDN'T DO IT!
ONYX - ORIGINATOR NOT YET EXPOSED
YASS - YOUR ARTWORK? SAY SOMETHING!
ICCO - I CAN'T CLAIM OWNERSHIP
ICCA - I CAN'T CLAIM AUTHORSHIP
WITHCITO - WHO IN THE HELL (OR HECK, IF YOU PREFER) CAN IDENTIFY THIS ONE?
WITHARFT - " ASSUMES RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS?
NOSIG - NO SIGNATURE

I agree. I personally like either parenthesis (), obelisks {}, brackets [], or these
thingies <>. That way it's easy to tell that the not-a-sig is in there, and not a part of
the artwork.

This could possibly get confused with shading on the pic, I think. Better to use
something like a word, this would even let you search for u/i pics on google: NOSIG
group:alt.ascii-art.* -- or something like that.

Good idea! Thanks for bringing it up!

Methinks that 8 letters would be a bit much. I was thinking more like
four, since few people (such as former president George Herbert Walker
Bush) have FOUR initials. Most have three, fewer two. I'm starting to pick
up a little bit of consensus that a symbol before and after would also
help distinguish it from initials. Also, once it's agreed on what the code
for "Unattributed" or "Unknown" will be for the group and it's had a
little while to be in the FAQ, it would gain common use simply because of
how frequently it's referenced.

IMHO, simple and distinguishable, including a symbol at each end would be
the best guidelines for such a mark. [NOSIG], <unknown> and such work well
for such a purpose. I know I put some of these kind in myself as examples,
but the personal disclaimer type like IDDI (I Didn't Do It) or the
solicitation for creatorship ?DUDT? (Did You Do This?) doesn't seem to
have the right tone for me, now that I've thought about it. For myself, I
use ascii-art in a variety of ways, like popping them into emails or posts
in other parts of Usenet, so a more low-key symbol that just says "I
respect the artist; I just don't know who did it" would be more on target.
That's my 2c.

Thanks, CJ! I have several variants of the hug image, and now they can at
least bear credit to the earliest known diddler;

OBRAAscii (OBligatory Re-Attributed ASCII Art):

       ___ .~~~~ . ___
  ____( \ /________\ / )____

                         @@@@@@@@@@
                          @@@@@@@@

(View this in a monospaced font like Courier New or else
you'll think this is a Picasso instead of a hug!)

And here's one for Ascii Annie to diddle should SHE want to give someone a
cyberhug;

My hat is off to you if you can do that, but I believe that we should accept

It's very nice, Annie. And Happy Birthday! Mine is the 6th. How old will I
be? Here's a history/geography assignment; what month, day and year did
the former British colony known as the Gold Coast become the independent
country of Ghana? I was born the same month, day and year. Yes, Annie, you
can't escape homework even on Usenet! ;-)

Second assignment; what do *YOU* think would be good candidates for a code
to indicate "Author Unknown" on a piece of unattributed ascii-art? (Trying
to get this thread back on topic after having gotten it off-topic!)

later on....

Well, if it's unattributed, I'd just leave it that way. The

Yeah, 8 letters overdoes it a bit. One more to add to the list:

?HYSTA? - Have You Seen This Artist?

I concede that consensus. :)

I still like the ring of <NOSIG>. It doesn't have the "it wasn't me, honest!" tone to it
as some of the others do, as you pointed out. I also believe that this should not be a
word in the english dictionary, so if someone wants to search out <NOSIG> artwork, they
can do so without having to wade through every conversation in which the word "unknown"
was used. Of course, the -only- thing we here at alt.ascii-art find to be unknown has
only been the artist of a <NOSIG> work, but every little bit helps. ;) And that's my 10
won to throw in the pile.

ObAscii:
    _
 .' . '.
. # T # .
' _]_[_ '
 '. _ .'

(a rough estimation of the tails side of a 10-won piece)

Whatever floats the newsgroup's boat.

SUGGESTION: when you post to this thread, mention the ones you like of
what's been posted already in addition to any new ones you add. That way
the group can be working toward consensus.1

I only knew that Ghana and I shared "birthdays" (and your Mom got the year
right--March 6, 1957 is the day) from a random "hit" years ago in reading
the Annuals my folks had bought of the "Encyclopedia Americana". Good for
your Mom!

My main concern is the differentiation between ascii-art where the sig has
been *intentionally* stripped (as I've read about in some recent threads)
and where someone has gotten hold of a piece of ascii-art, would like to
give credit, but doesn't know who to give it to.

Later on, Annie...

You wanna dance with her?? But you can do the shag even now... THAT IS
IF ANNIE would like to be on the same planet with you (if given the choice)

Shag also means
* A tangle or mass, especially of rough matted hair
She just got her hair straightened, so why in a years time do you want
     to revert her back???
* A coarse long nap, as on a wollen cloth
* a rug with a thick rough pile
* Coarse shredded tobacco

I know the tobacco bit more than the other coz it happened with a friend
he was Dutch and his brother was in Durban, he went visiting his brother
and there he went to a shop and asked the lady behind the counter for a
SHAG... and SHE WAS SHOCKED!! She nearly tore this guys head off before
he could even explain that IN Europe, or atleast in Holland SHAG is a
pouch of tobacco for rolling your own cigarettes.....

?:)
