Usually posts on this group are ASCII _art_.
Well I am a bad artist, so a technical drawing will have to do.
The wiring of an 10/100baseT Ethernet cable:
Device1 Plug1 Plug2 Device2 Ethernet 10/100baseT
1 1a. . . . . ,1a 8 1,2 computer->hub
X X X......X X X
2 1b' V V V V `1b 7
3 2a-. . 6 3,6 hub->computer
\ / \ /
4 3a. .\./. .\./. 5
X XXX X XXX X...
5 3b' V/V\V V/V\V 4
/ \ / \
6 2b-' V 3
7 4a. . . 2
X X X...
8 4b' V V 1
At the moment I do not like the asymetry of using 'V' and '.', but
'A' at the top looked bad and '"' at the bottom was totally wrong.
Anyone some better suggestions?

BUT! ... they do look like exellent reditions of the beam from some ultratech massdestruction weapon.. and with a little redidling could be made to look like strands of DNA. Anyways .. i liked them :) CeeJay

Hmmm. That would actually be suggested by my diagram. But it isn't so in real, so my diagram is actually broken! Properly 2a/b and 3a/b are each twisted around each other (the cable has just 4 pairs in it. So that would make: 1 1a. ,-. ,-. ,-. ,-. ,-. ,-. ,1a 8 1,2 computer->hub X X X X X X X 2 1b' `-' `-' `-' `-' `-' `-' `1b 7 3 2a----. ,-. ,-. ,-. ,-. ,----2a 6 3,6 hub->computer X X X X X 4 3a--. / `-' `-' `-' `-' \ .--3a 5 X X 5 3b. / \ ,-. ,-. ,-. ,-. / \ ,3b 4 X X X X X X X 6 2b' `-' `-' `-' `-' `-' `-' `2b 3 7 1a. ,-. ,-. ,-. ,-. ,-. ,-. ,1a 2 X X X X X X X 8 1b' `-' `-' `-' `-' `-' `-' `1b 1 Yes, that is how it should be, technically and ASCII-ly. -- Neil Franklin, nei...@franklin.ch.remove http://neil.franklin.ch/

But it is actually 2 wires woind around each other (4 (10 Mbit/s) or 5 (100 Mbit/s) times per foot cable length). In fact the amount of crossings should be dividable by 2 (oops, it was 7 in mine, should have made it one loop longer). -- Neil Franklin, nei...@franklin.ch.remove http://neil.franklin.ch/
