You're right. Not that the shopkeepers around here understand it. They must
think it have been christmas for some months now.

I think it's ok for shops to christmas decorate in december .. and they did that
this year.
Not like some years back when I got the first christmas catalogues in october.

I think Annie must have been wrong .. it's not a scandinavian dish but a
strictly norwegian one .. I have certainly never heard of it - I will check
tomorrow to see if a similar dish exists here under a different name.

It looks like pancakes .. I got a sudden craving for pancakes now .. of the
danish kind - I have tried american pancakes too and there is a world of
difference.
It does share some similarities with the french kind though ..

I didn't know lutefisk either , but as I never eat fish myself I can't say for
sure that this cannot be found here.

That would explain it then. (Is that some kind of bread?)

We have it in Sweden, but _only on Christmas_ (as one dish on a
smrgsbord full of *good* food...). Apparently it *should* be
poisonous, but for some unknown reason people can eat it and survive.

Lutfisk is one traditional dish for Christmas, yes...but it can
also be ordered in big-city (Stockholm) restaurants almost any
time of the year.

   >Apparently it *should* be poisonous, but for some unknown reason

That's because the lye (which is the poisonous substance) is boiled
out of it before the lutfisk is served.

   >Clue 1: Norway != Sweden

Norge + Sverige + Danmark + Suomi = Scandinavia
(plus Greenland, Faeroe Islands, etc., etc.)

   >Clue 2: Joaquim is Swedish, not Norwegian

Does that mean Joaquim can't eat food that is not Swedish?

I am American, but I can eat Swedish pancakes, Belgian waffles,
Mexican burritos, Spanish rice, German struedel, Dutch chocolate
and Columbian coffee. ;)

There are many Norwegians living in Sweden, and they want lefse.

I live in a small town in America -- very far from Norway -- and
I can buy lefse =here!=

If you go to a large grocery store (not a small neighborhood shop,
but a big supermarket) or a large bakery, I'll bet that you will
find lefse.

The way I heard it it's poisonous the same way that a bumblebee can't
fly. Scientific methods say it "should" be poisonous, reality says it
isn't (as in: doctors can't really explain why people can eat that stuff
and survive).

> >Clue 1: Norway != Sweden

[Not sure I agree with that definition of "Scandinavia", but I'll ignore
that for the moment]

Sure:

lefse can be --\ lefse can be
found in Norway --/ found in Scandinavia

is true.

That does not mean that:

lefse can be --\ lefse can be
found in Scandinavia --/ found in Sweden

has to be true.

[Since Annie Ascii doesn't seem to understand simple logic I see no
point in continuing a discussion with her.]

P.S. you're excepted that you took regular german standart answers "JA", "NEIN" to make them something NAZI like, cos you're only
14 years old. Even if you just want to make it clear to most. try other ways. It's absolutly foolish to try it with words out of
your german dictionary. I say "Ja" a .. an uncountable time a day, and that's never nazi like. but, anyway .. just a hint, i don't
want to say more, cos there would be too much to say, to describe why many germans react this way when notgerman ppl do what you
did :)

Greenland is self-governing , but not independent.
(I'm Danish btw)

Otherwise I agree with your opinion of what Scandinavia is.

There have been talk about making the Faeroe Islands independent , but there are
many people from both the Faeroe Island and Denmark that like the arrangement we
have at the moment.

Iceland was once Danish too .. hey so was Sweden and Norway, parts of germany
(it was denmark then) and dusins of colonies around the world.

They were either given independece , sold or lost in wars. Some parts of denmark
that was lost still fell a certain closeness to Denmark , Skne (given to Sweden
to end a long war, but with the agrement that it should keep it's danish
herritage , schools , churches and language .. The swedsh king broke that
promise a few years later and began erasing all sign of it's danish herritage)
and Slesvig-Holstein ( Given the free democratic choice to decide what country
to belong too after the germans had occipied it for several years during war )

Thankfully the Swedes and the Germans don't wage war on us no more and we are
content with making jokes about them and buuuhhing them at soccermatches :)

> The next quest would be to draw all these eight(8) flags in Ascii-art!!!

That would be easy because nearly all share the same form and pattern .. only
the colours are different .. besides it have already been done.

is it your stance that only Europeans and non-Americans know about usenet?
is it America-bashing that you are engaged in, or are you simply
prejudicial regarding Americans.
"ascii annie's" comment was prejudicial, and in error, but i don't see

No, not at all. I am absolutely *against* prejustices in general. It
was simply meant as a sarcastic statement. I thought it was overdone
enough to get it. Sorry if anyone felt insulted.

Simple statement: Making fun with prejudice usually ends in turing
yourself into a jerk.

Sorry, if someone got it wrong (especially like you, MJP) - I
personally try to be unbiased at all. It's just that some people seem
to try to make me look like a fool at that attempt sometimes :)

yes, it would be better if i had provided an URL.
But i downloaded the Jargon file from www.jargon.org and did not know
that you can link to the entries directly.

And I thought that this law should be known by most of the people here
as it is mentioned in the Jargon file.

[1] an advertisement email I (and probably lots of others) got wanted
to advertise a "live sex web cam" in German; Babelfish made
"Phasengeschlechtswebnocken" from it...

(Phase = electricity (whether it is in the wall outlet or not) - or
the "state" of the moon (full, half, ...), Geschlecht = gender,
Web=web, Nocken is that shown above)

I know there's at least 1 state where it's illegal for a woman to drive a
car *unless* a man walks in front of the car waving a red flag to warn
pedestrians :-)

I wonder who ever came up with that...

You can link almost everything. And the usenet laws especially aren't
a thing that is /only/ availabe in the jargon files ;) Ever tried
google on "usenet laws"?

In here is an ascii art group and no usenet fanatic group ;))
Although there are often crossposts from some fanatic groups....

Don't remind that special spam though I guess I've received it, too.

There are usually more meanings that just one in a translation.
Translating sex as Geschlecht isn't wrong at all. And the Nocken
translation of cam is meant like in "Nockenwelle", cam shaft. Local
translation stuff ([1] & [2]) helps :) babelfish is true fun but it
offers only one solution. <http://dict.leo.org/> is better to that
respect.

Amongst the places where oral sex is prohibited are:

Tennessee
Oklahoma
North Carolina
South Carolina
Arkansas
Florida
Indiana
Minnesota
Maryland

Also in San Francisco and in Singapore does this law apply.

It's illegal for a woman to drive a car unless there is a man either running
or walking in front of it waving a red flag to warn approaching motorists
and pedestrians. (Memphis, Tennessee city law)

That one?

I think that law was made early in the 20th century, back when women were

Looking through the laws I see some sensible laws and laws that however odd they
may sound serve a good purpose.
I wonder why they were admitted to the database .. seems there are some dumb
webmasters too.

Can you spot some law amongst the dumb law that when you think about it aren't
as dumb as they would first appear ?
Preferably some from your own country.

I'm Danish .. do you want some explanations for some of the laws from Denmark ?

I had the exact same feeling when I read the Danish laws on that website a
while ago. Like the one saying that you have to turn on the lights when you
turn on the engine so that people won't be surprised when a car by the curb
"suddenly" moves...

He probably meant URI. It's a more general term (a URL is a URI but a
URI doesn't have to be a URL). IIRC, the 'I' is for "Identifier".

That would be difficult. The only laws from Holland in that archive are:

 - It is legal to smoke pot, buy it, or have less than 5 grams with you.

And:

- Prostitution is legal but the prostitutes must pay taxes like any other
business.

>I'm Danish .. do you want some explanations for some of the laws from Denmark ?

Let me see...

"If a horse drawn carriage is trying to pass a car and the horse becomes
uneasy, the owner of the car is required to pull over and if necessary,
cover the car."

Ahem, cover it with what? I usually only have my coat with me...

"Attempt to escape from prison is not illegal, however, if one he is caught
he is required to serve out the remainder of his term."

Now that's just not fair. I think someone should be rewarded for attempting
to escape!

"No one may start a car while someone is underneath the vehicle."

You Danish sure know how to take the fun out of starting your car.

"When driving, you must have someone in front of your car with a flag to
warn horse drawn carriages that a motorcar is coming."

So how come Denmark don't hold the world record for the Marathon?

"Any carport added to a building increases the value of the building by 15.5
times the cost of building the addition."

_That_ is a law???

I meant URI, like Veronica kindly already pointed out :)

That reminds me of that great Dilbert comic from somewhere back in the
time. It went a little bit like this:

PHB (PointHairy Boss): I was in a meeting with some collegues from other
companys and they all had URIs. Why don't we have those?
D (Dilbert): We have our web addresses. But we can change them to URIs.
I assume it will take me one week.
PHB: Do so.

.... or something like this. Sadly the Dilbert archive doesn't have the
great search function like the userfriendly archive[1], where you can type
in "titanic" and are pointed at one of the most terrific cartoons Illiad
produced :)

He most likey really meant URL :-).

From http://www.w3.org/Addressing/:

------------------------
UR* Terms

The basic picture, specified in section 1.2. URI, URL, and URN of
RFC 2396, looks like this:

         _______________________________________________________
        | ________________ |
        | | ftp: | |
        | | gopher: | |
        | | http: __|____________ |
        | | etc | | urn: | |
        | |_____________|__| | |
        | URLs | | |
        | |_______________| |
        | URNs |
        |_______________________________________________________|
                               URIs

URI
Uniform Resource Identifier. The generic set of all names/addresses
that are short strings that refer to resources.
URL
Uniform Resource Locator. An informal term (no longer used in
technical specifications) associated with popular URI schemes:
     http, ftp, mailto, etc.
URN
     Uniform Resource Name.
1.An URI that has an institutional commitment to persistence,
availability, etc. Note that this sort of URI may also be a
          URL. See, for example, PURLs.
2.A particular scheme, urn:, specified by RFC2141 and related
documents, intended to serve as persistent, location-independent,
          resource identifiers.
------------------------

I doubt strongly, that Donderfliegen will be satisfied with an URN, as
any normal publicly used browser can not use them. So he really needs
an URL.

Any motorist who sights a team of horses coming toward him must pull well off the road, cover his car with a blanket or canvas that blends with the countryside, and let the horses pass. If the horses appear skittish, the motorist must take his car apart, piece by piece, and hide it under the nearest bushes. (Pennsylvania state law)

Makes me wonder what an URN would look like... If i understand correctly, an

I have never seen an example. I do not think it is defined, apart from
the urn: beginning being reserved for them.

> If i understand correctly, an

AFAIK IP addresses (and anything else physical) make an URI exactly
non-URN-able.

Todays URLs are essentially IP address or hostname and then something
local. So they can get broken when a document changes server (say
because you move webspace provider), or of it changes place in your
sites directory hierarchy. The "fix" used today is to have an
per-institution (that can be an individual author) something.domain
sitename as DNS CNAME that points to the current host. And then
inside the sites hierarchy not move the documents.

That is why I as private person have my own domain franklin.ch,
because I can only so ensure my URLs to stay intact. My first website
was an classic www.provider.dom/neil.franklin and all URLs failled
when I had to change due to the provider folding up. And no redirects
for obvious reasons (server gone). I learned and got a domain.

URNs were intended as an different method of server/space-independant
document ID numbers, a bit like the "library of congress" IDs to
reference a document. Needless to say this turned out to be
complicated to implement (it most likely needs an entire distributed
database into which documents must be "checked in"). So not
surprisingly it never took place (or at least never became publically
known). The "fix" was good enough and immediately available.

The nearest things to URNs I know are the Freenet document IDs, and
they are a bugger to use. Plus the entire Freenet sydtem is unreliable.

So todays browsers are most likely not even URN capable. So URI simply
becomes technodazzle for intellectuals to use to make themselves sound
better informed. Real web users though need URLs, and should demand such.

Because Gerfried Fuchs wrote that he wanted an URI, but he was erring,
as he wants an URL. If he ordered an URI he could be given an URN, which
would be useless for him. And I strongly doubt he wants something
useless. :-)

To point out that URI=URL+URN and that no one here wants an URN, so
order URL, not URI. Complicated, I know...

Why do you think that it would be useless to me? What do you know
about me that maybe even I don't know about myself? Just wondering.
Let me decide myself if it would be useless, can you? :)

If you can give me an URN I might be happy with it, too. Please let me
