ANSI/ASCII----Difference?

Can someone explain to me the difference b/w these two? I see ASCII art,
but a friend of mine referred to ANSI art. What's the diff?

Well, I'll try. ASCII art is an art done with standard characters, like
letters, numbers, some special chars like . , [ ] - _ etc.

ANSI art is an art done with:

1. more characters (128 - 255) - like e.g. some international ones, or shade
   marks when talking about PC;

or/and

2. couple of colors (4 or 8 usually). Very often the only character used is
   space (' ') with changed background color. More advanced color ANSI is 
   done using colors and shades.

or/and

3. control codes which allow to e.g. clear screen, move some lines  up or
   down. There are also some special codes used on Amiga only which allow to
   move 1 pixel (graphical pixel!) down which makes possible to make ANSIs
   which can look like normal pictures! 

The art that appears in most cases on this newsgroup is an ASCII art.

 *ASCII* art contains _only_ printable characters, and so can:
 (1) be posted to newsgroups directly without special encoding; and
 (2) be vieweb on your newsreader directly, without saving and
 feeding into a viewer program for extended character sets.

 The other stuff with control codes for colour etc is *ANSI*.

ASCII uses the character set up to Decimal 127 only...usually the
characters on your keyboard.

ANSI characters are Decimal 128 to 256 often referred to as the
IBM Extended Character Set. If you use those ANSI characters in
your pictures you have to UUencode them before you post them to the Net.

Colin,
  How about ^M (Carriage Return) and Escape? Aren't they well below 127? I
vaguely recall that ^M is 13 and Escape is 27 ... but I don't think
they're included in ASCII --- they're really control codes that can change
the screen colours and move the cursor around --- and mess up terminal
emulations ...
  Am I misunderstanding? X-)
