 *ASCII* art contains _only_ printable characters, and so can:
 (1) be posted to newsgroups directly without special encoding; and
 (2) be vieweb on your newsreader directly, without saving and
 feeding into a viewer program for extended character sets.

 The other stuff with control codes for colour etc is *ANSI*.
