Yo-

I've been working on an online ASCII-graphical role playing game.
It's a big project, but coming along nicely. I'm looking for small
(8x8 or smaller is idea) ASCII monsters, chests, gravestones, etc, for
the illustrations. So far I've made some lame ASCII art myself, but
if anyone has any contributions they would like to add, that would
rock!

It's not a profit-making game, so I can only give my gratitude, and
credits, natch.

Thanks,
Diane

This has some similarities to a RogueLike idea of mine involving ASCII
art, to which this group contributed heaps, go look at the following URL
for a relevant ASCII art collection;

http://codemonkey.sunsite.dk/projects/beyond/News.htm
http://codemonkey.sunsite.dk/projects/beyond/newstuff2.html
http://codemonkey.sunsite.dk/projects/beyond/ASCII%20dudes.txt

You should also head over to the newsgroup for RL developers;

Dude, these rock!

The giant with the big sword is especially dope, as is the falling
down guy. Not sure how to work the falling down guy in to a RPG, but
it's way cool.

It's very cool how much you can get across in just a few characters.

Thanks so much,
Diane.

Just don't make it a roguelike because they are evil :(
But as I have said I think roguelikes which have really long item
descriptions should have ascii pictures too :D

How big is "8x8"? It could mean:

12345678
2XXXXXX7
3XXXXXX6
4XXXXXX5
5XXXXXX4
6XXXXXX3
7XXXXXX2
87654321

or something like:

1------------.
2            |
3            |
4            |
5            |
6            |
7            |
8____________|

(i.e. eight lines and looking sort of square)

or 8x8 cm, or 8x8 inches, or something else.

What works best in this context is:

(number of rows) x (number of columns)

Myabe I should be more precise. When I said 8x8, I really meant "not
too big".

The area available for the player and loot and suchlike is about 50
characters by 22 characters, so I could include a pretty large ascii
art, but it seems to work better with many smaller ones. Here is the
output from the game, one of the rooms:

Monster X, in Park , it's  Hour 14 / Tick 32

In this room:
* Ross God
* Monster X
* Oak Tree
* Iron Shield         Take
* Leather Armor       Take

So, the smaller the better. The chests you sent are quite good, an
nice rounded improvement on my boxy one.

Thanks for the help!

Diane.

P.S. Someone else wrote in about RougeLike game development (is that a
game with makeup?) but after looking it over, the rouge model seems
not well suited for an HTML based game. But thanks anyhow!

Yep, you are precise. The rooms can be smaller, too, if we want.
The size is stored in the DB, and read before we draw the room.

I think it was the "Vacant Lot" or suchlike. It's at the top of the
HTML page, I neglected to cut and paste it into the post.

Hey, you seem interested in this project! That rocks. Would you like
to be one of our testers once it gets a bit more shipshape? I can
make you a log in and send you a link once we get it quais-functional.
 XGiving is the target alpha testign date....

Thanks!

So 22x54 is the maximum size for a "room"? How well defined are the
details? Do you have a list of rooms? Do you have a list of items you
want to put in the rooms?

So it's an html page. I got the impression it might be some kind of text
window. What does this html page look like? Maybe you could post a link
to one example page?

> Hey, you seem interested in this project!

Actually, not very. What I am interested in is avoiding the type of
situation where somebody posts a request for something, then several
people spend lots of time and effort making very nice pictures only to
then be told that they're the wrong size. When you've seen it happen a
couple of times you get less interested in helping people unless they
are very clear about what they are looking for.

No, I have no list of items yet, but I am building up an assortment of
weapons, monsters, and suchlike for the rooms. Bateus scary monster
is a good one:

Scary monster.

I still need a mace, suit of armor, helmet, magic wand, and could
really use a potion bottle ascii art. The smaller the better. If the
room has toom much stuff, it winds up overlapping and looking a bit
odd...

I will get one up soon if I can. The game itself is an html-based
ascii art aspx page. You click links to pick stuff up or fight
monsters.. It's half working, or maybe 25% working right now...

That sounds bad. But most of the stuff people have poseted is very
good, and I can certainly use! I appreciate the help, and will send
out some links when it gets more usable.

Hye, thanks for the porions, these are the perfect size. And thanks
to everyone else who has been pitching in, Veronica's maces are very
good, albeit almost too big, they will make a good large mace.

That's not a sock puppet. This is a sock puppet:

               .-%.
              / %  \
              |%  e \

              |    |
              |`-._|
              |    |

(as you can see from the fancy hat he's a sock puppet called "Emperor")

Here's the same one after a trip in a washing machine:

Like I said, be more specific. Mention objects you've been thinking of
and people will know what to draw. Otherwise you are asking people to
have your imagination for you, and it's unlikely that they would come up
with things that you would like.

The trick is to make the picture that's clear enough that other people
can tell what it is.

Lets see what ants look like:

http://images.google.com/images?svnum=100&safe=off&q=ant

The one-big-and-one-small eye thing is common in ascii art and usually
means "I'm crazy", which might not be the right attitude for a
monster...

Head attached more or less directly on the body... big head, slim front
body, big back body... long legs that go up and then down... head on
same level as body...

 \  \
 |__/ _   .-.
(o_o)(_`>(   )
 { }//||\\`-'

Better? More like an ant? (I don't see how the legs could be different
without ruining the rest of the picture.)
