CHALLENGE: Best ascii-art filename
alt.ascii-art
· 28 messages · 15 Jan 1999 - 21 Jan 1999
I just discovered that you can name an HTML file something like:
`~!@^*()_{}|[];,..html
And everything seems to work fine.
So can people create some one-liner art with those characters?
See: <URL:http://www.mcs.net/~jorn/html/jorn/`~!@^*()_{}|[];,..html>
for demonstration.

The problem is, you're using a Non-ASCII character in the filename - a control code of some sort. It looks like a space to Veronica. In Pine's message reader/viewer screen, on my terminal, it appears as a caret "^" followed by an "o" with a tilde over it. Pine rendered it as caret followed by an uppercase "U" when I called up the message editor to write this reply. > Hmmmm, think FIRST... THEN post Indeed. Had you stuck to ASCII characters, your "filename" would have appeared properly on both Veronica's and my terminal. -- ___________________________________________________________________ | . . | * http://www2.southwind.net/~natedac/ * | | _ _ _|_ _ _| _ _ |-----------------------------------------| | |/ \`_| | /_)/ |`_|/ ` | GCS d- s++:++ a-- C++ UB>++ P+ L>++ !E | | | |(_| \_ \_ \_|(_|\__ | W++ N++ K- w--- M- V? This is not ASCII. it's pretty, but not ASCII. I have only studies Info tech for 2 Semesters now, but I know what ASCII is. it stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. 8Bit ASCII for example is able to generate 256 different Symbols / the Alpabet. The "real" signs begin at 033 Decimal and it's the ! and they end at 126 Decimal wich is the ~ ASCII also describes stuff like SPACE, DEL, ESC,... nicole -- remove spam. from addy to reply! |I use Topaz new as my ascii viewing font,It only has glyphs for the standard
|ascii codes,so i see a "!" or a little rectangle for the other charectars...
|This makes it very easy to spot "offending" characters in a ascii drawing.
|I was wondering,What was the character supposed to be,or atleast what font
|are you using....
|
|Also, yes i know this is bieng picky, but wasnt the characters for this
|challenge supposed to be confined to:
|`~!@^*()_{}|[];,.
|
|meaning that you are disqualified to win any of the fantastic prizes
|that may or may not be given out by someone or the other?

I don't know about any other OSs, but DOS and Windoze won't let you have a
filename with a * cos it uses it as a wildcard character.
*.txt - All files with .txt at the end.
*.htm* - Any files with .htm in their name ii .htm or .html
???.txt - three characters followed by .txt.
Any attempt to create a filename with a * in it produces and error.

I'd say it's common to all OS's. The ? mark on the oother hand, can be putinto a Unix filename with some trickery, I think I've received one or two files from friends with ? is the name. -- ___________________________________________________________________ | . . | * http://www2.southwind.net/~natedac/ * | | _ _ _|_ _ _| _ _ |-----------------------------------------| | |/ \`_| | /_)/ |`_|/ ` | GCS d- s++:++ a-- C++ UB>++ P+ L>++ !E | | | |(_| \_ \_ \_|(_|\__ | W++ N++ K- w--- M- V?
