I just discovered that you can name an HTML file something like:

     `~!@^*()_{}|[];,..html

And everything seems to work fine.

So can people create some one-liner art with those characters?

See: <URL:http://www.mcs.net/~jorn/html/jorn/`~!@^*()_{}|[];,..html>
for demonstration.

This is an old one...

http://members.xoom.com/(::[]::)

Not a real URL. But it would be interesting as a URL for a hospital.

Where do you see spaces in the filename please?

The "_/\__o(^:)" is the filename, not the "porno site", that is just a

The problem is, you're using a Non-ASCII character in the filename - a
control code of some sort.

It looks like a space to Veronica.

In Pine's message reader/viewer screen, on my terminal, it appears as a
caret "^" followed by an "o" with a tilde over it.

Pine rendered it as caret followed by an uppercase "U" when I called up the
message editor to write this reply.

> Hmmmm, think FIRST... THEN post

Indeed. Had you stuck to ASCII characters, your "filename" would have
appeared properly on both Veronica's and my terminal.

- Good idea, but on my puter it was just an 'o' . No special or control
character...Hmmm... Let's just say it was the computer's fault or bette Bill
Gates =)

First three lines..to the "?" look normal, then accented letters finish
line three and part of line 4...then I see some more *other language*
things. The last two lines (except for what looks like Greek symbols) are
just thingys that I have never seen before....filled in rectangles with
hooks on them and little patches of dots is the best way that I can
describe them.

No apples or peaches though...

This is not ASCII. it's pretty, but not ASCII.

I have only studies Info tech for 2 Semesters now, but I know what ASCII
is. it stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange.
8Bit ASCII for example is able to generate 256 different Symbols / the
Alpabet. The "real" signs begin at 033 Decimal and it's the ! and they
end at 126 Decimal wich is the ~

ASCII also describes stuff like SPACE, DEL, ESC,...

Wow-- I don't even see what you see Geraldine!
Look at all the messy equal signs and numbers!
This appears to be a very graphic reason why
the non-ASCII characters are NOT used in
ASCII art! -- and should not be used in signature
files!

It's an apple I tell you! The apple logo with a bite taken out is a
standard part of most Mac system fonts (in this case, Courier).

This proves that my computer is superior, for it can display fruit!

I use Topaz new as my ascii viewing font,It only has glyphs for the standard
ascii codes,so i see a "!" or a little rectangle for the other charectars...
This makes it very easy to spot "offending" characters in a ascii drawing.
I was wondering,What was the character supposed to be,or atleast what font
are you using....

Also, yes i know this is bieng picky, but wasnt the characters for this
challenge supposed to be confined to:
`~!@^*()_{}|[];,.

meaning that you are disqualified to win any of the fantastic prizes
that may or may not be given out by someone or the other?

I was using Courier New on Win 98.
<alt 0149> is a tiny rectangle in the middle of the letter, so it kinda looked
like a nose.

How very strange! My computer shows: '"^ where your arrow is pointing,
but shows different characters when I went into "reply"...an "o" with an
"accent grave" over it (the one like this ..\.., but much smaller.

I don't know about any other OSs, but DOS and Windoze won't let you have a
filename with a * cos it uses it as a wildcard character.

*.txt - All files with .txt at the end.
*.htm* - Any files with .htm in their name ii .htm or .html

???.txt - three characters followed by .txt.

Any attempt to create a filename with a * in it produces and error.

Commodore DOS, and Unix both have this feature. I'd say it's common to all
OS's.

The ? mark on the oother hand, can be putinto a Unix filename with some
trickery, I think I've received one or two files from friends with ? is the
name.
