No, the second picture breaks badly in netscape on YOUR computer. My computer is (obviously) running in a higher resolution, as I see it perfectly. Although you're right.. using <pre> would be a good idea John

Hi guys, you might be interested in a program I've written. It takes a
grayscale bitmap in PGM format an creates an ascii art picture. I know
it's not the first of it's kind but you might like to try it out at:
http://www.cs.bris.ac.uk/~pclark/p2a.html
Feel free to improve it, and let me know what you think...

I think you have misunderstood something about html. Your second picture breaks badly in Netscape. My suggestion: (on both pictures) Replace every with an ordinairy space (the kind you generate by pushing the space bar on your keyboard), remove all <br> tags, surround the ascii art with <PRE> and </PRE>. That way you will get cleaner html source code and a smaller file size (which loads faster). However, obviously you don't know the difference between the size of a monitor and the resolution it's running in. John

Also, I was talking about the monitors here at this school computer lab. The big monitors (21") are set at 1280x1024, the smaller ones (17") are set at 1152x900. No, I do not have the option to change such things as resolution on this equipment. Many, _many_ people out there have their monitors set at 640x480. A well written html document should "survive" quite easily on such displays. This one didn't. -- _ __ __ _ _ __ ___.--'_`. \ \ / /__ _ _ ___ _ _ (_)__ __ _ .'_`--.___ __ ( _`.'. - 'o` ) \ V / -_) '_/ _ \ ' \| / _/ _` | ( 'o` - .`.'_ ) _\.'_' _.-' \_/\___|_| \___/_||_|_\__\__,_| `-._ `_`./_ ( \`. ) //\` '/\\ ( .'/ ) \_`-'`---'\\__, uggc://jjj.yhqq.yhgu.fr/~ix/ ,__//`---'`-'_/ \` `-\ r93...@fz.yhgu.fr /-' '/ ` ascii art chat: http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/cgi/asciichat/ '

Gee, everything becomes very small, but that's in line with someone suggesting to use the smallest font size to read this group, so you can only see the pictures and can't read the spam ;-)) However, the 'steins are best viewed on a 15" monitor, 800 x 600 resolution, and font size 12, or equivalent display parameters (if you have a Mac, choose the Monaco font, that's superb for most other ascii art as well.) ========================================================= [] .oo Visit the Gallery of the 'steins! Hell, the 486 I bought back in '94 could do 1024x768 no problem... And like I said... my monitor's only 15" and handles 1280x1024 no problem :) John

I run in 800x600 and I found the picture messed up as well. I never said it did depend on the processor... all I'm saying is, if a crap old machine back in '94 (486DX2/50 with a 1Meg Cirrus 5434) can handle 1024x768, then a machine of today can EASILY handle it. There's hardly been a machine made in the last 3/4 years that don't got PCI, and the smallest PCI graphics card you can get is 1Meg, and as standard most machines now ship with at least 2 or 4. So I say, if people can't handle it, it's their problem, and let the people who can just get on with it... I got a 16Meg Matrox Millennium G200 AGP... so I don't care :) John

Another thing to think about is color... if I want true color, 32 bit I have to drop down to 640x480... Though I only have a built in 2 mb graphix card... Which may be true of many people in the business world...

Just because people CAN leave 640x480 doesn`t mean they will. I know someone
who's parents can`t read the fixedsys font on and 800x600 screen... this is
another posibility. Others just don`t know how to change it.
Basically, you can`t force people to up their resolution. If you use
<PRE></PRE> it should allow the user to scroll around the picture left and
right and not wrap.
Martin, an 800x600px user.
