No fancy schmancy "but the G stands for Graphic, and THAT has a hard 'g'". It's "jif". It was BORN that way. Bob, the creator of the .GIF format, WANTED it that way. Saying 'guh-if' not only sounds lame, but it reflects the learning of the speaker. ;) So, 'jif' on! : The "g" is pronounced as a "j" because it is followed by an "i" as in

My suspicion is that it has nothing to do with the general rules of
pronunciation. (Or that "Graphic" is a hard "G".) I presume that
initially people just said "gee" "eye" "eff", and the more familiar
they became with it and the faster they said it, the more it elided
into "jif".

I think the main problem, and a common one, is that you all are trying to
pronounce an acronym! You wouldn't say "Siyah", you say "C.I.A.". Just
because this particualy acronym happens to make a pronouncable word
doesn't mean that it should be pronounced, but if you are going to
pronounce it, it should be pronounced as it's SPELLED, completely
ignoring the original words that it is shortened from.
That's what I think anyway.

The word "don't" has an apostrophe in it; the word "mood" should not be capitalized; the word "that's" has an apostrophe in it; the word "can't" has an apostrophe in it; the word "English" should be capitalized; the phrase "shut up" is two words, not one; you're missing several commas; and you really, really should not be flaming people, especially if it's for something you're guilty of yourself. Now, perhaps we can return to the topic.

Mood ring SHOULD be capped you moron, cuz its a noun... some peoples kids.. <shakin head> I dont bother with apostrophes cuz Im a lazy typer and it suits me to omit them... anything else? I have not mispronounced anything in there... typed it wrong maybe. Yer arguement has no validity...have a nice day now..:)

I would appreciate any ascii-babies or little children that are out there. I'm looking for something for a congratulations e-mail to an expectant couple. Thanks ... Tim
