Oh, yeah, we get that question every day on this newsgroup. As a matter
of fact, someone walked up to me the other day on the street and said,
hey, you're in one of those ascii newsgroups, right? What the hell is a
lemur?

Actually, a lemur is a small primate. Relation to apes, monkeys and
humans, (of which I, begrudingly, am a member) they are often mistaken
as monkeys, due to their similar activities. (they climb in trees, jump
around like monkeys, etc) They are actually beautiful creatures, with
big ol' eyes, and usually long bushy tails, commonly with stripes on the
tails. Bright, as are all primates, and pretty, unlike most primates.
(unless you call an ape pretty. Only pretty primates I know of won't go
out with me!)

I don't know another name for it but "lemur". Generally SLOTHS and
lemurs are grouped together. It is sort of in between a squirrel
and a monkey----a primitive, treerunning creature on the line
which leads from the first mamals to the apes, bears and pandas.

A Lemur is a kind or primate, but of an eilear type than the most
frequently thought of kind. It has a big strippy tail, and yes kind of
looks like a squril, only much bigger. They live in madagascar. You can
probibly find pictures of them on the web. :):):)

A lemur is a kind of primate, related to monkeys, apes, and humans. They are primarily found on the island of Madagascar. They are
typified by their long tails, large eyes, and aboreal habits, although many (such as the large ring-tailed lemur) spend much of
their life on the ground. Many of the more interesting species of lemurs are also nocturnal.

For a more detailed lecture, you can call or write me. I suggest, though, that you just try picking up a book. Finding information
on lemurs should be an easy thing to do, and I have give up teachin' and educatin'.

Good luck, with learnin' bout them lemurs.

Using my handy search program, WEBFERRET, I quickly found this page
devoted to platypi:
http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~jimcclur/hobbies/platypus/

There is a small photo of a platypus swimming at:
http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~jimcclur/hobbies/platypus/platy1.gif

And I know that my sister thought that this cat by Felix Lee looked like
a platypus when she first saw it.

    /, .-'`' -. ;-;;,_
   |,4- ) )-,_. ,\ ( `'-'

So I altered it, and with profuse apologies to Felix for ruining his
beautiful sleeping cat, present it here again (I seem to recall having
this discussion last year):

And my webferret is looking for a picture of a lemur. Ah good, here's
one with an explanation at:

Ah, _that_ is a lemur. We call it a ringstaart-maki.
ringstaart = ringed tail

Thanx for your help!

As Bart said, great. But may I suggest this small change so that the
tail is ringed:

Ok, I don't know if I can get in the detail of the lemurs above, but I'm
giving it my best try.

Well, that is my best shot at a realistic looking lemur. I guess I just

<SNrrrK> de-cloak from lurking ....

The correct term is "prosimian primate." These are highly endangered
relatives of ours from the rapidly disappearing rainforests of
Madagascar.

Been enjoying the lemur ascii's, all, thank you very much !

Just had a need to add these links because a very dear friend of mine is
doing exciting but near-futile research to save these beautifil animals
before they become extinct. There are dozens of lemur species, for the
moment. Plz check 'em out :

Wanna bet this species is more closely related to man than to a squirl
:)

In Dutch "Lemurs" are called "lemuren" or "maki's". Die halfapen van
Madagascar die met zwaaiende armen naar de lekkere hapjes van de
cameraploeg komen gerend in EO-documentaires, weetjewel :)

PS What's a platypus?? And what does it look like in ASCII?

hmm, well here in Australia, platypus's grow on trees!
of course you have to be careful not to look them in the
eye or they'll swoop down and tear out your jugular! ;)

I'll draw one when I have the time! (curse exams! :~(

Aargh, why didn't i think of that?
I've tried to make it look more like a ring tailed lemur.
All i could come up with was the bizarre thing shown below.

                     ,,
                    //
                   ##

                 ##
                //
               ##
               ||
               ##
             ,-..-,
          \_/ \
        / |
        | \_,' /^| /

       _\| \ ) _\\
        ~` _\| ~`

...and the new one is more flexible too :)

Right, neither lemur, nor sugar glider, it is
labeled as 'possum' by Rowan himself. He
should know. But I admit it looks much more like
a sugar glider than a lemur. (I didn't know those
sugar gliders before.)

Hmmm... I don't know why he'd have labelled it as a possum. Are you sure
about that? And, for the record, a 'sugar glider' _is_ a possum.

But, this is [was] a beautiful ascii drawing of a "Tarsier" - probably from
the Philippines, or around the area.

In fact, I've seen a photograph that looks like it _had_ to be the model for
Rowan's drawing. Sorry, I don't have the photo, I've only seen it.

I got that from : http://www.afn.org/~afn39695/crawford.htm
where it sais :

Hm, there's always the possibility that Rowan knows as much about
those animals as I do -> nothing. Who knows...

Nice... how about a frontal view? I am tired of looking at this lemur's hind end.

That's a very good Prosimii Lemuridae Hapalemurinae, aka the Gentle Lemur.
More active during the day than most Lemuridae and as it's such a 'nice'
prosimian it probably won't elope with your credit cards and twinkies as
other Lemurs would.

Andreas- you're not the only one!
I've been collecting these little llizard sigs--
love them-- always so positive, happy, and chirpy...
(can llizards be chirpy?)

Keep them coming llizard! ;)

And I do love the 3 little pigs and their houses!
Nicolas did a great job with them... and Andreas,
nice toppings to the pic! It has been saved in my
archives! ;)
