Can anyone help me out and point me towards somewhere where I might find a
program I can use to convert GIF pics (or, optimally, a series of GIFs)
into ASCII, shaded ASCII, or colorized ASCII?

     With that last address, Email Effects, you can copy and paste any type of
graphics into the ASCII window and it will convert for you, I'm not saying it
will do it perfectly, you'll have to play with it (but it's a really cool ASCII
program).
