Does anyone know how to create a web page using ascii? I tried creating a sample
page and my art was all jumbled together, a mess!. I've been thinking of having my
own page but I don't understand how to do it. Also, I heard Geocities offers free web
pages. Is it relatively easy for one to build a ascii art page thru them?

Hi Dana,

reckon you forgot to put in the <pre></pre> tags in the .htm(l)-file

-------8<
<html>

<head>
<title>anyone's ASCII-art page</title>
</head>

<body>

<pre>
 "copy and paste" for example Dana's solar system
</pre>

</body>
</html>
------->8

guess the others will tell you Geocities has pros and cons. but uploading your
ASCII-art page to Geocities will be as easy/difficult as to any other provider.

I found that GeoCities was substantially easier to use than most
providers in that it provides a web interface to upload files to. It
used to be pretty slow, but NO MORE! They also recently increased the
page size allowed to 3MB for me; dunno if this was a global thing.

The <tt> tag works for fixed-width fonts too. Believe it stands for
teletype.

If you use the <PRE></PRE> tags, you must also remember to change all <
signs within it to &lt; signs. If you use <XMP></XMP> tags, then you don't
have to worry about this, but I have heard Netscape doesn't like <XMP>
anymore.

Yeah, but I use Notepad and UltraEdit-32 which are text editors rather than
HTML editors (I can't stand all the extra junk most HTML editors add...)

The <TT> tag is _not_ good for ASCII Art because it formats the text.

Much better to use your own editor. The Geocities one makes your page
unfriendly to those who have text only (Lynx(?) I think it's called - I
have it in the freenet). No matter how many times you exchange &gt; for
> and &lt; for < in the ascii-art that you have that encorporates those html control characters, the "advanced" (grrrr) Geocities editor will cleverly exchange them back making your drawings look ridiculous for those people who don't have the latest in browsers.

Otherwise, Geocities is pretty good and as Joan says, if you have
Netscape, it's very easy to upload there.

Two methods:

1. Use a simple text file, name it filename.txt and put it on your
homepage.

2. Write an html document with the pictures in it:

      I. Copy all the pictures to the document.
     II. Change all   &   characters to   &amp;
    III. Change all   <   characters to   &lt;
     IV. Change all   >   characters to   &gt;
      V. Add <pre> at the beginning of the document.
     VI. Add </pre> at the end of the document.
    VII. Add whatever other html you like to the document.
   VIII. Save as filename.html (or filename.htm on some older computers)
         and put it on your homepage.

Yep, sounds like you didn't format the ASCII pics--
use a (pre) and (/pre) before and after your pics--
of course use brackets (wakas?) < > instead of the

  Also, I don't have a problem with GeoCities-- you

No it doesn't! At least not for anything but oneliners.

: <html>
: <body>
: <tt>
: ASCII Art Here
: </tt>
: </body>
: </html>

First of all, <tt> is a text-level tag like <big>. It should go inside
a paragraph (or a heading or a list item or..). More importantly, all
it does is change the font. The lines are still auto-wrapped and any
consecutive spaces collapsed into one. Not good at all!

<html>
<title>Example 1</title>

<h1>Using TT and PRE tags for ascii art</h1>

<h2>How to do it <tt>:-)</tt></h2>
<pre>
   )
  ((
 |~~|
C|::|
 `=='
</pre>

<h2>How not to do it <tt>:-(</tt></h2>
<tt>
   )
  ((
 |~~|
C|::|
 `=='
</tt>

<p>Obscure "mixed-content" definitions for certain tags like BODY, LI
and TD do make the above valid HTML. However, TT really belongs inside
a paragraph like I did with the smileys. Text put between paragraphs
like above may get smushed together with the last paragraph unless you
are careful with your end tags..</p>
</html>

Do try to save and view the HTML. You'll notice that the second cup
gets put all on one line, like: ) (( |~~| C|::| `=='

Oh, and even though the cups were ascii art, I guess I should add more
to keep this on topic. Here's my version of "Slinky's Dream".

               _.-"-._ (best viewed with a narrow font, it seems)
           _.-'       `-,-"-._
          |-._     _.-'"      `-,-"-._
       _.-"-._`-._|-._     _.-'"      `-,-"-._
   _.-'       `-._|   `-._|-._ _.-"-,-'"      `-._
  |-._         _.-|    _.-"-,-'      "`-._     _.-|
  |   `-._ _.-'_.-"-,-'      "`-._     _.-|_.-'   |
  |       |_.-'      "`-._     _.-|_.-'   |       |
  |-._    |-._         _.-|_.-'   |       |    _.-'
  |   `-._|   `-._ _.-'   |       |    _.-|_.-'
  |       |       |       |    _.-|_.-'_.-'
  |       i-._    |    _.-|_.-'   |_.-'
  `-._    t   `-._|_.-'   |    _.-'
      `-._z       |       |_.-'
          `-._    |    _.-'
              `-._|_.-'
                  "
6 steps should be the minimum, but that doesn't look as good since the
steps have to be lower. (With 4 steps it degenerates into an ordinary
platform - step height = 0)

While playing with this I found a way to shade it without revealing the
illusion. I'm now thinking of raytracing the thing, complete with a
raytraced slinky of course. =)

With my IE4, <TT> makes it use my currently defined fixed-width font....
what browser/newsreader are you using in your examples? I'll make a note
not to use TT, am just curious.

It has nothing to do with browsers, newsreaders or fonts. It has to do
with <pre> and <tt> being two different things. <pre> keeps all the
spaces and newlines etc without changing anything. <tt> "removes
unnecessary whitespace", i.e. you get a similar effect as if you used
<font face="courier"> except that it will work for everybody, not just
those people who happen to have the font courier.

Here is a picture of a guitar when showed with <pre>

This might depend on your preferences. The default, of course, would be
Courier New; I don't remember what IE3 would let you change it to but IE4.0
and 4.01 (which I have) only let you change it to fonts that declare
themselves monospaced.

So don't change anything, although you could put a "If you changed your
default fonts" disclaimer up.

Well, in this respect MSIE is being entirely reasonable. *There is no way
<PRE> _inside_ <FONT> could be valid HTML.*

I'll repeat this once more: <FONT> (as well as <TT>) is a text-level tag.
It should be placed only within a block, such as <H1>, <P>, <PRE>, <LI>
or <BLOCKQUOTE>.

Instead of guessing, please read the standard and the WDG style guide.
You could start at http://www.htmlhelp.com/

Anyway, here's a quick list of different tag types. (far from complete)

Text-level (embedded in text)
  Closed (may only contain text and text-level tags)
    <EM>, <STRONG>, <CITE>, <CODE>, <VAR>, <DFN>, <Q>, <B>, <I>, <U>,
    <BLINK>, <BIG>, <SMALL>, <SUB>, <SUP>, <TT>, <FONT>, <SPAN>, <A>
  Unclosed
    <IMG>, <INPUT>, <BR>
Block-level (define a block ie. paragraph of text, group of tags etc.)
  Pure text (may only contain text, no tags whatsoever)
    <TEXTAREA>, <CAPTION>
  Textual (may only contain text and text-level tags)
    <H1> - <H7>, <P> (closing tag may be omitted), <PRE>, <ADDRESS>,
    <BLOCKQUOTE>, <DT>
  Structural (define a group of tags, may not contain plain text)
    <UL>, <OL>, <DL>, <TABLE>, <TR>
  Mixed-content (may contain text or block-level tags)
    <BODY>, <DIV>, <LI>, <DD>, <TH>, <TD>, <CENTER>, <FORM>
  Unclosed
    <HR>, <COL>, <COLGROUP>

[Note: there's a lot to be said about unclosed, pure text and other
unusual tags.. this is just a simple example.]

In the HTML 3.2 tutorial I use -- to be found at
http://www.hut.fi/~jkorpela/ ...somewhere -- the author Jukka Korpela does
mention the "example" tag <XMP></XMP>: "This presentation does not discuss
the XMP, LISTING, and PLAINTEXT elements. They are now deprecated
(obsolete), and PRE should be used instead." The <XMP></XMP> still works in
the majority of browsers, but in the long run it will definitely vanish.

?? In all MSIE3 versions I saw these tags did the job! (MSIE3 and MSIE3.02)
Are you sure you don't have MSIE's Javascript animation problem in mind.?.

></BODY>
></HTML>

I like the trick! Some pictures look better in say Topaz New than in
Courier...

BUT... It works even better when you put the <FONT></FONT> tag inside the
<PRE></PRE> tag:

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Hello again</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<PRE>
<FONT FACE="Topaz New, Lucida Console, FixedSys, Courier New, Courier">>

</HTML>

This way your HTML script works fine in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0
(version 4.71.1712.6) too. I surely hope Ilmari is still around; he/she is
just the right person to enlighten us.

Still, a great idea, Martin :)

Don't!  :-)

<PRE> is defined to work for "preformatted text", for example various
tables and ascii art. Or you could look at it this way: In order for
preformatted text to remain formatted all characters have to have the
same width. When all characters have the same width you have a
monospaced font.

If IE doesn't live up to this you should write to Micro$oft and complain
about it, but first, make sure that it isn't _you_ who have done
something wrong... (check the fonts in your browser, write your own html
in a plain-text editor (e.g. "Notepad") and in not some program that
decides to be clever about it and do stuff to your code without asking
you for permission first, try more than one example, try one where the
_only_ html you use is <pre>, try some pages that you know _should_
work...)

(My personal recommendation would be to take IE and carefully put it
back in its box and send it to some place where they handle toxic waste.
I was not impressed by what I had the misfortune to observe when I had
the chance to take a look at IE... I wasn't too impressed by the Windows
version of Netscape 3 either... :-P #$%& I have heard good things
about a program called "Opera" though, even if I haven't actually seen
one in real life (it's not for unix... yet...). You can find it here:
http://opera.nta.no/ )

I'm so relieved to hear that all that is unnecessary.

NOTE: If you hit the reply button, add an "e" to the "freent";
its absense is to stop the torment of automatic mailers.

:   Unclosed
:     <IMG>, <INPUT>, <BR>, <APPLET>, <OBJECT>, <BUTTON>, <IFRAME>
: Block-level (define a block ie. paragraph of text, group of tags etc.)
: Pure text (may only contain text, no tags whatsoever)
:     <TEXTAREA>
: Textual (may only contain text and text-level tags)
:     <H1> - <H7>, <P> (closing tag may be omitted), <PRE>, <ADDRESS>,
:     <DT>, <CAPTION>
: Structural (define a group of tags, may not contain plain text)
:     <UL>, <OL>, <DL>, <TABLE>, <TR>
: Mixed-content (may contain text or block-level tags)
:     <BODY>, <DIV>, <LI>, <DD>, <TH>, <TD>, <CENTER>, <FORM>,
:     <BLOCKQUOTE>
:   Empty
:     <HR>, <COL>

Well, that was a quick list indeed, as I was in a hurry, and it seems some
of my examples were misplaced. In any case, the list, which I corrected a
bit, is just a crude simplification. Don't trust me, trust the W3C at
http://www.w3.org/

I was also about to say the you could put <FONT> inside <PRE>, but then I
found this gem from the HTML 4.0 declaration:

<!ENTITY % pre.exclusion "IMG|OBJECT|APPLET|BIG|SMALL|SUB|SUP|FONT|BASEFONT">

What this means is that the tags listed above are not allowed inside <PRE>,
supposedly to keep the columns aligned. I'd assume using them won't break
anything, but they might get ignored. This particular list has been debated
somewhat, and I believe most browsers allow these.

But why use <FONT>, when there's an even better way - CSS. Admittedly only
the latest browsers support it, but it won't do any harm:

<HEAD>

 font-weight: bold; /* no need for ugly B tags */
}
