This has been told to me as a true story:
A sailor went AWOL and the shore patrol was looking everywhere for him,
but he cleverly evaded them: When asked "Have you ever been to Norfolk?"
he replied "No, but I hear it's a nice place". The shore patrol moved on.

The homelessness wasn't as bad as

The naval term is "sea story" and of course it wasn't a proper
one as it did not begin "This is no sh*t, this really happened",
the naval equivalant to "Once upon a time".
