I thought that it was still up for modifications...
and not ready for posting....

One thing I did notice as I scanned the FAQ quickly,
Allen Mullen's name is misspelled. It is Mullen not Muller.
Minor, I know, but it ought to be corrected...
Perhaps we ought to set a deadline for people's comments,
additions, etc... and then we can get this finalized FAQ up.
BTW, I also plan on posting the FAQ at my Geocities site.
That way I'm assured that it will always be around..
No offense Martin-- I've seen ASCII art sites come and go.

I found a little time... a few notes...
* when talking about reasons why a picture may not look
correct, there are two more possibilities:
1- extra spaces at the end of lines which can cause wrapping
2- it may just be a bad picture!

* do we really want people posting .gif and .jpgs to the
newsgroup? Personally, I'd prefer them not. Either post
the picture and give us the URL to it -or- request an artist
and privately email the pic to them (with their approval,
  of course)

*how about adding the word "request" in there when you
  state "do you have....?"

*you go into the 'how-to', but don't mention any other
tutorials available. I have a copy of the Daniel Au tutorial
at my site. Allen Mullen has a couple tutorials stored at
his site (Normand Viellieux, etc). I could easily link to
them from the web copy of the FAQ.

* another GOOD copyright /internet website:
Intellectual Property Law Primer
http://www.timestream.com/web/info/mmlaw.html

* a conversion URL (I have several listed in a subpage of
my website but I don't know if any of them are good) This
one was recommended -- RATS-- I can't find it now-- I'll
have to look further and repost.

Those be my comments for now...

This is exciting news about the FAQ. I hope it will also be posted on
its own as well.

And just a small point about the phrase in the FAQ:

" To find out how to animate ASCII art using JavaScript, see
      alt.ascii-art.animation "

There are very few people who actually go there. I think more
information will be gleaned about animating ASCII art using JavaScript
from Kangaroo's page:
http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Marina/4942/ascii.htm
Click on animation, then click on FAQ.

An aardvaark?? It looks like Bottom's costume for Midsummer Night's
Dream.

is it just me or all the ASCII art in the faq is missing the <pre></pre>
tags around it? Well I went to see it with lynx, it sould be ok since we are
talking about ASCII art, but every peace of ASCII art is smashed to the left side
without the proper blanks to fill in the space!

I went back again to take a look at the html source and it indeed
has the <pre></pre> ... but I still don't why lynx gets confused with so many
"strange" formating tags!
Maybe if other people is also getting this you should consider cleaning
up a little that html code that is always over done by html composers. I bet
you could even save some Kbytes doing it better!! :)
Send me a mail if you'd like to have a try at it ...

Looks fine to me, but I have never seen nearley so many tags!!!!!

Gawd, I think you could get rid of 90% of those tags and it would
still look the same!!!

You really should e-mail MicroVision Development and tell them
that they should really get thier shit (well, tags) together
in WebExpress!!!

I do all my HTML by hand, so I know what is required to make that,
and it is NOTHING like what it has!!!

Check out the link in my new sig!: (and see how many tags I used)

I found a nice little freeware program, TRIM.COM, which removes
those trailing spaces...lots of pics suffer from them.

TRIM.COM works like a charm and I use it routinely for cleaning up Ascii
pics:

------------------------------------------------------------
section 1 of uuencode 4.02 of file TRIM.COM by R.E.M.

begin 644 TRIM.COM
<encoded_portion_removed>
``
end
sum -r/size 29401/1971 section (from "begin" to "end")
sum -r/size 64800/1389 entire input file

The <PRE> tag is applied to the page; I believe it is the strange
orientation of all the rubbish tags that confuses Lynx. (yes I went and saw
it myself in that).. It looks fine in IE4.0, and if you subscribe to the
theory that all newbies are technologically advanced*... ;)

with Netscape, but it does cause errors when useing it's view

I think there's a lack of <pre> tags on the pics. :-/ The bit that says
"these lines should be the same length:
iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" should have a <pre> tag too I think, to make it clear

I`ll have to check that out - There should be <PRE> tags round the whole

Nope, there's plenty of <pre> tags.

It is caused by his HTML editor (WebExpress) adding thousands
of unneeded tags to the document.

I can see it fine, but by looking at it, it is not hard to imagine
that it would confuse many browsers.

If there was even the slighetest problem with the parser in any

alt.ascii-art is one group which must be very careful to have a "lynx

In Netscape, there is a blank line inbetween every line.

Ok Everyone, I`ve fiddled with my HTML code and have found two
possibilities for formatting the asciiart. What I need is for people to try
them in as many browsers as they can and see what they come out like!

The second one seems to go funny in MSIE3, so if anyone can explain what`s
going on here it would be much appriciated!

The two HTML files are attached.

They are the first bit of Page one of Joan Stark`s art pages on my site (A
Grim Reaper just in case it is not clear in any browsers!)

Why? Ascii art isn't usually computer code, although there were some
pretty artistic entries to the International Obfuscated C contest a while
back...

> The code-tag wraps a line that is longer than the width of the viewer's

Well spoken. <code> is for C or Java or Perl (or whatever) source code;
text that can be fed into a machine to make it do things. <tt> (teletype -
yow!) would be OK for one-line art, but the usual rendering scrunches
spaces. Using the block-level <pre> element is almost certainly the Right
Thing as whitespace isn't squelched, and every reader is supposed to
display it as-is, in monospaced type.

Alternatively, just present the art as plain text files; Unix flavour for
preference. I'm sure nobody will mind if colour doesn't matter :)

Is it possible for you to construct a form and post it to this news group?
That way people can add comments and suggestions to the ASCII FAQ.

I suggest that you set an ending date like 15 December for contributions to
arrive. The FAQ could then be released on 25 December, so that we can have
something to celebrate about this Christmas. :-)

P.S. If the FAQ is ready for distribution as I write this, please ignore
this message.

Well, <CODE> may not be the best choice for ascii art, as it is a text
level element used for displaying pieces of code.

 * It is intended as a semantic marker for code, not for ascii art.
 * Spaces are still collapsed inside it as normal.
 * Browsers are not required to render it monospaced - it is merely a
   convention.

<PRE>, on the other hand, stands for preformatted text, exactly what
ascii art is. If defined broadly enough, the terms are in fact
interchangeable. <PRE> is also the only non-deprecated HTML block level
element that instructs (note: even this isn't mandatory, as it may not
always be possible) the browser to render the contents monospaced.

As an example of semantically correct use of <PRE> and <CODE>, this
is adapted from beginner's guide to redcode:

[snip]
<p>This is just what another classic warrior by Dewdney, the
<em>Dwarf</em>, does. It "bombs" the core at regularly spaced
locations with <code>DAT</code>s, while making sure it doesn't hit
itself.</p>

<pre>
        ADD #4, 3 ; execution begins here
        MOV 2, @2
        JMP -2
        DAT #0, #0
</pre>
[snip]

For ascii art, it'd use <PRE>, possibly with style sheets. If one really
needs in-line ascii art, the tag to use would be <TT>, which is a text
level style tag that instruct the browser to render the contents as
monospaced ("teletype") text, *but otherwise normally*, ie. you'd need
to use &nbsp; (non-breaking space, 0xA0, an ISO-8859-1 character) instead
of spaces for ascii art.

[snip]
<P>I can't see much use for &lt;TT&gt; in ascii art, except maybe for
one-liners like this rose: <tt>---'--<@</tt></p>

Why do you want to "format" ascii art? Why not just stick a <pre> in the
beginning of the file and a </pre> at the end and change all <
characters to &lt; ?

Martin-- why bother? Matthew sent you the FAQ in html

   Greetings,

Your "that html code" reference is actually the key, I believe.
Sure, <PRE> is nice, but try "<CODE>" instead, or in addition
to. Of course, I speak before I've tried this in reference
to displaying ASCII art for say Lynx review, but whenever I
think of <PRE>, I think of <CODE>, too. Please let me know
what you think on the matter. ;-) Take Care and Blissed Be.

Odd. When I think of <PRE> I think of <XMP>.. but I guess that's just a
personal quirk.
