Hmm. These pictures look good in Arial, but Arial is not the font to use.
Use some fixed width font, one that will have the lines below line up:

  Should--.
 Line Up \/

mmmmmmmmmm |
iiiiiiiiii |

Arial won't line up, but a fixed-width font, such as Courier New or
FixedSys, will. Then they will show up correctly.

The last choice under my Edit menu was word wrap. Should I try to use Wordpad

The set Font option is only availible in Win98's Notepad...

If you have any other Windows Notepad, then your art should be in FixedSys
which is fine ... just use that.

Thanks,

I still use Windows 95 so that must be my font. Why did someone think my pic
looked funny? Am I just a bad artist? Should I quit?

I cut the picture out of notepad and pasted in the newsgroup dialog box. (I
log on through AOL). I don't know what kind of font they use or how to put an
attachment through AOL since I do not see a button to attach files like I can
with my e-mail editor. The newsgroup reader/poster is very plain.

no, no, no... wordpad will make a total mess of your ASCII art. Someone has
been playing
around with your system. Notepad's font is
default at FixedSys. Someone changed it from
it's original font. All you need to do is change
it back. You may have to do the changes under
system settings.

I'm going to ask a silly question: Are you using a fixed width font in
your newsreader?

Try sending the picture as an attachment.

Do that. AOL's newsgroup reader is still in
Arial, a proportional font. The ASCII art
*will* look skewed. Don't worry about it.
Don't try fixing it to look good on the newsreader..
that will skew the picture up for everyone
else.

Don't quit... keep posting. We don't want to
discourage people from trying to make the ASCII art.

Somewhere along the line the picture is being spaced incorrectly. (See

Ok, then either the newsreader is using a proportional font or notepad
is.

You said you are using Windows95; so unless someone has been hacking
your registry/system settings, notepad is using a fixed font.

So... That leaves your newsreader. I personally have never used AOL so I
am afraid that I don't know EXACTLY what must be done to get it to use a
fixed font. I seem to remember some posts a while back that explained
what to do to get AOL's newsreader to use fixed fonts. A search at
DejaNews should get the information you need.

A good idea is to check out the alt.ascii-art FAQ's that gets posted
here on a regular basis. I think that there are instructions you need
there.

You can also do the copy/paste and ignore what the picture looks like
after the paste. It should post correctly assuming you did the copy
correctly.

Vernonica,

Thank you for posting that! I think I may use that in my sig since I love the
kittens. I just thought it looked so awful, but it looked ok on the link you
gave. I think I am going to find another newsreader soon ;-)

It looks good there. I looked at it via Leisure Net and Dejanews and it still
looks so weird, I decided not to use it, so many people use AOL, or Deja-news
so my kitty would look weird to them. (I think these servers use Arial as the
default font, if I tweak it to look right in those servers, it won't look right
in those servers than uses fixed width font).

Is there any alternate solution? Is there anyway to make my cat look good with
either font?

CysterCat, the little cat you posted before was just lovely. The above
however, leaves a lot to be desired.

This is an excerpt from the ASCII-art FAQ:
...........................
: 2.What isn't ASCII art?
:
: The following specialized art-forms are not ASCII art in the `pure'
: sense, and are not welcome in the ASCII art Usenet groups.
:
: ANSI, `extended ASCII', or `high ASCII' art. Many computer systems
: have an extended character set of 256 or more characters, based on
: the ANSI or Unicode character sets and having the first 128
characters
: identical to ASCII. These characters should not be used in ASCII art
: because many types of computer system do not support them, and even
: those that do may not display them in a standard way (for example,
: the Windows ANSI character set is different from the Macintosh ANSI
: character set).
:
: HTML art. HTML, the language used in Web pages, can be used to add
: special effects such as colours, font size, and (ugh) blinking text
: to ascii art, and HTML can be read by some newsreaders. However, the
: key word here is `some'. To many newsreaders, HTML art will just
: appear as a jumble of <TAGS> and will be totally unrecognizable.
:
: If you want to create HTML art, do so by all means, but put it on
: a Web page and post the page address (URL) to the appropriate
: Usenet group. Advice on how to do this can be found at
: http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Studios/9334/asciionpage.htm.

That's the way it looks to the rest of us.

It's not the _servers_ that use fixed-width fonts.

No, but I think you'll have a hard time finding a computer that doesn't
have a monospaced font...

Go back to Deja (yes, they've "improved" again! *sigh*) and try the link
at the bottom of the post saying "View original Usenet format". You'll
get a plain-text file (i.e. just black-on-grey text, no links or colours
or anything like that). You should now see what the rest of us see.

Don't try so hard. Just draw the pictures in Notepad and copy-paste to
your news reader. DO NOT try to "improve" or "correct" them in any way!
DO NOT use html!

Ok-but I worry that if I started using the kitty in my sig it will look like
crap to people who don't know or won't set their newsreaders to view it
correctly. I post in several other newsgroups and they probably don't know all
this stuff.

(Sigh)

People who know ASCII art, know that it is to be viewed
in a fixed-width font... what might look good in one proportional
font will look like crap not only to those using a fixed-width font
but will also look like crap to those who are using another
proportional font.
Fonts are not created equally. Proportional fonts are
different from one another.
You have a better chance of the majority of people viewing
your picture correctly if you are using a fixed-width font
(or space it as such)

If your font looks like the font I used in the picture at
http://voices.vossnet.co.uk/a/atkins/wotascii.gif then you have FixedSys -
that's a picture of my NotePad as it was when I first started the site and
it is still set to the same font.

I just copied this pic from the first message in this thread from you. I see
the lines in the outline not lining up and this is usually a symptom of
using the wrong font. You might have intended it this way and if so, no
offence intended, but it looks like you made it in a non-fixed width font eg
Arial or Times New Roman.

  ^-----^
 / (@ @) \

This lines up to me - does it you? I'd put up what I see on my website but
unfortunately the website i'd usually do this with isn't updatable right now
since my hosts have disabled the uploading thing while they upgrade it.
Perhaps someone else could?

Hope this helps,
-Martin

Martin,

Thanks. I have figured out it is the stupid AOL newsreader. If I copy and
paste something from Notepad, it doesn't look right. I tried to "fix" it and
therefore ruined it.

The way you "fixed" in is not right in my AOL newsreader. If I post anything
else, I will just do it straight from notepad and not try to fix it. I learned
my lesson.

The way you have it now it looks like crap to those who do know how to
set their news readers to view it correctly. Those who don't have a
choice, either they fix their problem or they don't care enough to fix
it and just live with it. I don't think you should spend too much effort
trying to please those who don't care... :)

I suspect that wordpad is not recommended so as not to confuse folks who
would like to try out all the fonts (and sizes) for their artwork and
don't understand how the drawings will be translated when posted into
the newsgroups.

If you want to see the Anglican font, it is at:
http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/Island/5510/a/anglican.html
I think it is a very nice font, although clearly and decidedly
unsuitable for ASCII-art.

I have often used wordpad (correctly, of course) too but generally
prefer EditPad.
