Hello,

I've been wondering what is the correct (or accepted) verb to describe the
process of producing ASCII art? Is it 'draw' (I *draw* ascii art) or 'write'
(I *write* ascii art) ... ? Both of those sound odd, since it isn't really
drawn because that implies either pencil drawing or in a graphics package,
and writing implies the forming of words, which are very rare in most ascii
pics.
I usually say 'make' or 'produce' (I *make* ascii art) but this is a little
general, so I was wondering if there is a better verb for it?

A lot of us seem to use the term 'asciify' to mean turning something into
ascii art - Maybe 'I asciify' is a good sentence... even if the verb is made
up?

Hmm......

Well, if you are using a keyboard, then you are "typing".

Who better to decide this than us. Martin why don't you put up a list of the
common ones and we will vote post. We can all vote on the one we like the
best or even vote on the two we like and do this for a week. Then you can
tally it up and we'll just accept the winner. We've done this before on
things and it worked really well. Martin it was your BRAINSTORM question,
what do you say bro?

<snip>

I don't have a problem with 'draw'. I'm sure that before computer
graphics packages became popular, 'to draw' implied pencil/pen drawing -
now you say it implies pencil/pen or a graphics package. How is a text
editor being used to draw ASCII art different to a regular computer
graphics package?

Apart from that, I think 'create' is also a good one - but then you can
'create' a picture on paper as well as 'draw' one. :)

I vote for "create". After all, the artists do *create*, then type or
draw :-)

|I've been wondering what is the correct (or accepted) verb to describe the
|process of producing ASCII art? Is it 'draw' (I *draw* ascii art) or 'write'
|(I *write* ascii art) ... ? Both of those sound odd, since it isn't really
|drawn because that implies either pencil drawing or in a graphics package,
|and writing implies the forming of words, which are very rare in most ascii
|pics.
|I usually say 'make' or 'produce' (I *make* ascii art) but this is a little
|general, so I was wondering if there is a better verb for it?
|
|A lot of us seem to use the term 'asciify' to mean turning something into
|ascii art - Maybe 'I asciify' is a good sentence... even if the verb is made
|up?
|
'------------------------------------

Thanks to Donovan for the excellent suggestion... Here's a list of the ones
I have heard so far...

create
type
compose
draw

Which of these works best? As per Donovan's suggestion I'm putting it to the
vote... and I'll be counting them up should anyone decide to take part.

Let the voting begin...

You don't really 'draw' and you don't really 'write', I think the correct word
is "CONSTRUCT".

Hi everyone. Im on a borrowed computer but its still me here clicking
the keys. I was surprised to read about Colin's death. Funny how
things happen in three's though. I am here, back in Toronto, for my
Grandmother's funeral. She died just after I bused up here from
Illinois. I missed seeing her before she died. When I called the
boyfriend back in the US, I heard his Aunt had also died the same day,
nearly the same time. Colin makes it a threesome. It would be too
weird if it wasn't true. :)

Anyway, I've just set up Free Agent on my Mother's machine. She is new
to the Net and has no clue what she is in for now that I have her
ready for the newsgroups. This has become my favourite part of the
net, better than the web or email even. :)

Hope everyone is doing great. I have no idea when I will be back on my
own computer again. Its so nice being on my own, not having to make
the bed in the morning or share it at night. I have *space* again!!!
LOL (Once again, Im lucky he doesn't read the newsgroups).

I usually say I create ascii art. But none of the terms really feel
"right". Does anyone have some other fresh idea? It really is a great
question.

Happy St Patricks Day to all. I don't have any of my ascii art here
and there hasn't been time to sit down and work on new art. I would
love to see anything for St Patricks Day. My Grandmother was a little
Irish "Pepper". With the big Day to be Irish coming up we are all a
bit sad to be without "Pepper".

Take care,

Laura

PS: Thanks to those who posted some of Colins ascii work. Colin would
post more of the work he collected than he did of his own. Most of his
work was new to me. :)

Sounds like something one would do with
Legos, Tinkertoys, Erector Sets, and Lincoln Logs.

Not very artistic, IMO.

Mmmm... but you have to take a break sometimes...

I still say that what you do is _draw_. If it's done on paper with a pen
or if it's done in "Paint" with a mouse or if it's done in emacs with a
keyboard is uninteresting. It's still "drawing pictures".
