JavE mentioned in German computer magazine

The German computer magazine c't recently had a short article about JavE
in a section where they give a quick review of half-a-dozen freeware and
shareware programs each issue.

If you have the magazine, it's on page 60 of issue 3/2002; there's also
a short review on the web at
http://www.heise.de/ct/shareware/default.shtml?prg=7063 . 7 readers
voted on it and gave it an average of 4.5 out of 5 points. The
"Softlink" (a special short number code listed with the article pointing
to a page of links) takes you to
http://www.heise.de/ct/02/03/links/060.shtml , which has a link to
JavE's home page.

c't is a great magazine and JavE is a great editor .. thankyou Phillip.
I posted to the german group as well as I'm sure they would want to know this.

I set FUT to this group , but if you someone want to make a reply in german they
can FUT to the german group.

While we are on the subject of jave .. the link from c't made me see that almost
all the places where Markus have inserted ascii-art into his HTML something have
gone wrong and some lines have shifted.
It wouldn't look good if some of the c't reader saw this and didn't think the
program could output it's ascii correctly.

And while the subject is JavE let me just abuse this thread to express all my my
lastest thoughts and ideas about about JavE (except edgetracing imageconversion
as we are discussing this in another thread)

1) The faq page (it's new - go see it) have messed up tables .. looks odd.
- and on the page I think the link should be http://java.sun.com/j2se/ to the
Java Runtime Enviroment , as the 1.4 is in release candidate and will probably
release soon.
I tested Jave with it , and it seems to run fine , only that cursor seems to
blink way too fast, when you don't move the mouse.

2) Why are the keyboard shortcuts soo weird ?
I want CTRL + C , CTRL + V , CTRL + X and CTRL + A to work as they do normally
do
I mean CTRL + Numpad 3 ?? .. what is up with that .. the combo doesn't even work

Some sensible keycombo's please.

3) I have begun making the

figlet font, using JavE.
Through that work I have realised that it would be VERY helpful if you could
edit fonts already created - both by editing the kerning , smushing .. etc ..
options and also by working it in reverse having it print out all the chars into
the document so you could make refinements to the font , and then save it again
as a .flf

Also the figlet tools could use some option to override smushing , kerning and
fitting rules as the FIGlet font format specification. explains that FIGlet can
do this (or is it FIGwin ?)

oh wait .. there is a chart .. i'll edit it to include JavE:

The help from figlet exporttool opens docs/./figletexport/figletexport.html and
not docs/figletexport/figletexport.html where the actual file is .. the result
is just a command prompt and not the help file as expected.

Hmm .. none of the help links seem to work for me .. the all open the command
prompt .. even with the correct path.

Thanks :-) They did not tell me that they were going to make that
article. I was reading at page 15 when I received a support request mail
with the referrence to the magazine (page 60). I was very very surprised
:-)

And I have to admit that for months I have had the dream of a one column
article in that computer magazine. Now it finally became true :-) I will
have to look for a new dream regarding JavE now.

What browser/system did you use? It all worked fine with the browsers on
Windows, Solaris and Linux I have tested it with.

That's the problem with JRE1.4: The keyboard shortcuts are broken there.
It must be the fault of the JRE. This is why I still recommend 1.3. I
hope they will fix it all when releasing the final version (1.4 is only
a "release candidate" - means somewhat like "it still is beta, but we
would like to release it").

I will add that to my list (I know: "it must be very long by now". But
in fact it is shorter than the list of implemented features :)

My very first Figlet program had that option - but I removed it, for it
was of little or no use. Just some more checkboxes and buttons to make
people weird...

I have filled in the missing places:
  (1) Only when you use the FIGlet dialog
  (2) Only when you know how to use FIGML
      The FIGML is the figlet markup language. I have never really
worked it out but in the FIGlet dialog you can use it. It should support
control files (because I once have written support for it), but I am not
sure about how to use it now and there seems to be a problem for the
program to find the files.. :o) Anyway, there are only a handful of
flc-files. They do not perform much more than rot13, uppercase and
lowercase.
  (3) If you manage to make keyboard input with such character codes it
should work
  (4) Hey, that's one of the most important options. Of course it is in

The first version had that option, too. It did not make much sense. The
only font it works well with is standard.flf - and that one is available
as seperate font mirror.flf.

This feature does not work on all systems. There is no platform
independent way of starting a browser :-(

IE 6 - WinXP.
I just tested Mozilla 0.9.7 and it looks fine.
Must be some sort of IE bug then.

Aha .. I think I have found the bug .. IE centers the text inside the PRE tags.

Meanwhile I guess I will have to edit the .flf by hand now .. unless you release
a new version fast.

It is of use when you create the figlet font .. a preview of your settings would
really help there.
The normal figlet dialog could just get an "advanced" dialog window or
something.

You mean overriding the direction , not vertical printing right ?
