As a resident of Rec.arts.anime, i see these all the time; however, they
more often show up it this simpler form:

 ^_^    smile
 O_O    shocked
          etc.

also:

 ;_;    crying

 ^_-    winking

 ^_~    winking2

 \ ^_^ /    joyful!

Heh.. i guess you'll never know when the odd assortment of groups you read
will run int one-another.  ^_^
