Suppose that what the microscope shows has a diameter of 1 milimeter.
Then

1E-3 meter / 1000000000 = 1E-3 meter / 1E9 = 1E-12 meter
                        = 0.01 Angstrom

1 Angstrom is the diameter of an atom which is about the resolution
of the best microscopes available.

These microscopes don't give a visual impression because to resolve
any object you need a wavelength comparable to the size of this
object. Compare 0.01 Angstrom (which is 1 nanometer) with a typical
wavelength in the optical region (500 nm as a number of thumb) and
you see that this is ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE.

Some time ago. Dies acedemicus. Taking place in philosophical
faculty. Prof. of Chemistry has atomic resolution images. Some guy is
handling projector. Seems to be no chemist: Trying to get the images
in focus. Resulted in laughter among some of the listeners of that
speach :-)
