I'm reading with OL Express on Win98 (Terrible, as any time it sees // then
another character it turns it into a file:// hyperlink which seriously
messes some up, but that's not my point).

At the moment I'm having to read with Courier New, but I get the feeling
that because this is a serif font it's making some pictures look weird - is
there a standard Win98 sans-serif font that is fixed width?

Cheers
Stuart

usually you shouldn't have a problem with serif fonts but _if_ it is
possible to access the font from that prog try "Terminal" although I
guess it isn't accessible 'cause it is no truetype font.. but it _is_
installed on your system

Use fixedsys. It's a TTF and is better than terminal and most things
look better than in courier new.

I'm able to answer my own question: Going to OL Express's fonts selector,
there's "Fixed Width" and "Proportional" listed - the fixed width list only has
those that are fixed width, although I need to select one of these for the
Proportional one for the ascii art to work. The 4 on my system are:

Courier New
Lucidia Consol
Lucidia Sans Typewriter
OCR A Extended

None of them are especially good though, so if anyone has one from the web that
works well, can you let me know?

Cheers

Stuart

Try looking on www.microsoft.com for the file gc0651.exe, it contains
the MS-Linedraw TTF, which looks just like the DOS fonts (and has
non-ascii chars too)

um? I donwloaded the file, and it contains the font MS-Linedraw TTF, but this
font looks exactly like Courier New not like the DOS-Font. :(

Where can I get the real DOS-Font? I need it, because it is the only font I
know, which displays the ' (039) correctly. Yes, I know that Terminal displays
the ' correctly, too, but its char-height is too low, so that all ascii-arts
looks bad. :(

BTW: How can I create my own fonts? Then I could copy&paste the chars from the
Dos-Box... ;)0

Lucida Console

I always thought that this font was due to the graphics card, as some of the
computers I used in the old dos days had one of those, some had the other. Or am
I wrong?

That all depends on what video card you had/have, what brand it was, whether it
was HGA, CGA, EGA, VGA, SVGA, what codepage you used...
Anyway, Terminal is quite similar to HGA DOS font.

A German or a Swedish font. Back in the days when i used GEOS on my C64 that was

In that case, download a C64 emulator and ask around uin an emulators NG for a
disk image of GEOS (preferably 2.1 or 3.0 if it's there. If you can read German
i'd suggest you'd try 2.5 as well)

Where did you get that info? It was my uhnderstanding that Berkely Softworks

Simple, there was no 160x120x16 limit, the C=64 had 2 graphics modes and 160x120
was only one of them.

There are a lot of programming tricks that you can apply on the C=64.
Undocumented features, "illegal" op-codes, and registers that weren't sopposed
to be there are a few of the things you can take advantage of as a programmer.

That's not BSW's page, it's CMD's site. I already knew about it since before
i've been a subscriber of Commodore World (from #1 to i think it was #22), i'm
still the proud owner of an FD4000 and a few versions of GEOS64...

>But $44.00 for Geos 64 ???

The last time i checked their prices was in 1998, just before i bought my first
PC.
But i know, it's very steep, but those that are still using their C=64 are true
hobbyists and are therefor often willing to pay for something they don't have
yet or to replace something.

Most people that hear that the C=64 had only 16 colors do not know that you can
optically increase the number of colors by cross-hatching and/or interlacing.
I used to have a C=64 drawing program that was capable of displaying 256 colors
by both interlacing and cross-hatching. The program worked in 320x200 but would
eventually give you an horrendous headache :-))
However, if you converted a .GIF file using GoDot to an interlaced bitmap, it
looked wonderful!

You forgot to mention that those 55-60 colors were only obtainable through
cross-hatching.

I've never been lucky enough to get me a SuperCPU, but i had a Flash-8 which
sped the C=64 up to 8MHz. which also made a great difference.

The C64 has many more than just two graphics modes, most of which are
based on the two you're thinking of. To avoid boring you guys with
details (THis is an ASCII Art discussion group, not a C64 forum :), let's
say this:

There is 320x200 mode in 16 colors, usually referred to as "hires" mode,
with restrictions on where those colors may be placed (particularly, only
two allowed in each 8x8 pixel area), but all 16 colors are available ove
the entire screen. GEOS uses this mode.

The 160x200 mode, referred to as "multicolor" mode, also offers all 16
colors, and allows more flexibility in placement (up to four colors per
4x8 pixel area, including the common background color). Most good C64
artists use this mode.

> There are a lot of programming tricks that you can apply on the C=64.

It is these tricks that lead to the other verious video modes of the
C64. These include options such as 320x200 with up to 136 colors (though
the useable range is around 55-60 colors) depending on your painting
style and the colors you choose to use in your image.

Downside is mode of these extended video modes really hog the processor,
leaving very little processor time available to do anything useful with
those displays (CMD Super CPU changes this, of course).
