I think the charset should include ASCII and then extended chars should try to maintain a fair (but not strict) compability with terminal fonts like the DOS font, with added new chars that make textdrawing easier. Perhaps it could even be programmed so some chars are dynamic .. ie they alter acording to what the GUI wants to do .. very useful if you want to display a moving cursor that is not just a big blinking block .. I think some of the old Norton programs used something like it
"'Raf256' Rafal Maj" <raf...@go2.pl> writes: > Font used will be... good-old DOS VGA 16x8 font (80x25 text mode :) If you look precisely you will notice, that in VGA text mode the font is 16x9 pixel[1], and the screen is 720x400 pixel. In VGA graphics mode you then get 16x8 pixel chars, 80x30[2] of them filling 640x480 pixel screen. [1] This is why multiple of the "chequered flag" >128 character next to each other look so funny (either every 8th pixel duplicated, or vertical space after every 8 pixels, depending on your video card). [2] You may also want to look at using the 80x30 mode, as it gives 5 more lines. 80x50 text is usually too squashed, making art distorted. > We will use ASCII 32..127, and mabe some other special characters >127, we > will deside later Only with <128 is it an ASCII-OS, else it is an PC473-OS. :-) > .------------------------. > | AsciiCommander [X]| > |------------------------| > |File|Command|Help | > |------------------------| > |C:\union\src\>_ | > | | > |________________________| > |files 152 | > '------------------------' Botton left corner change to: ` character. > .-----------------------------------------. > '-----------------------------------------' Tip: leave away the 2 lines, just split with |, looks more elegant: [START] | I Sys | ACmd | | I 09:00 And you have 2 lines more for user data. Same you may want to make an Mac-like one-line menu at the top of the screen. Or at least drop the bar beween the title and the menu. Looks good so far. But why limit to 80x25. There are still graphics modes
(and of course 80x50). You could use graphics modes with even more
characters.
Joey
Hey.
Yes, you can be one of beta-testers, the only
thing you must do is write an e-mail to raf256.

hm did i understand right? you will code an ascii os?
will you make it in textmode or make use of graphics mode to display
far more characters per row and column? that would make it easier and
give less limitations no?

But one can set up text mode to work with that resolution. 80x43 is/was EGA (remember that one?) high density text mode. 640x344 pixel and the CGA 8x8 character matrix, wasting 6 lines. EGA used an 640x350 monitor, standard was 80x25 with 8x14 charcter matrix. -- Neil Franklin, nei...@franklin.ch.remove http://neil.franklin.ch/ Hacker, Unix Guru, El Eng HTL/BSc, Sysadmin, Archer, Roleplayer - Intellectual Property is Intellectual Robbery
