Is it possible to render an image from a normal image file?  (eg *.gif,
*.jpg)

I dont want to download a renderer, so are there any Web sites that
offer this service?  For example, you send an image file and it sends
back a ASCII text file - is this possible?

there r a few sites around that will do that if u give them the image
URL, I'm buggered if I can remember where they are though :P
