A fisherman would say it means to trail worms through water teeming with fish, hoping for a bite. In newsgroup terminology, it means pretty much the same thing. ***What is the objective of the troll? The hobbyist may want nothing more than to provoke a reaction from the newsgroup. Some do it merely to call attention to themselves. There are career trolls who are dedicated to filling newsgroups with off-topic posts, flames, and general confusion. Some trolls are simple, while some are quite elaborate and long-running. Some trolls have achieved a degree of infamy. You can find out who they are by looking for the word 'troll and usenet' using any search engine. ***Is trolling only for the lonely? No! The happiest trolls travel in packs. The more the merrier. They give aid and encouragement to one another in their mission to destroy the newsgroups they infest. ***What are the tools of the trolling trade? Well, you have asked a big question there. For the creative and enterprising troller, there are just too many to list. Here's a brief sampling: 1. Hidden identities work well. As has been noted in the past, AOL gives 5 screen names. Now, those can be used to good advantage. The troller can appear to be 5 altogether different people as he/she/it carefully fans the flames. Seemingly endless off-topic threads that say nothing and go absolutely nowhere can be constructed in this fashion. But if someone notices that there seem to be 'too many' AOLers in the group, there's always: 2. REMAILERS. You can have all of these you want. A different identity for every day of the week. Or, if this isn't anonymous enough for your purposes, try: 3. ANONYMOUS remailers. It is said these are not easy to learn how to work, but well worth the effort to the would-be troller. 4. Cultivate other trollers for *buddies*. They are handy for backing up your ludicrous claims and other falsehoods. They will add to the general chaos in the newsgroup you are attacking. You will have need of your *buddies* as the posts grow further and further off-topic. And as the other people in the group begin objecting to your nonsense. 5. Never underestimate the power of e-mail. A troller can stay just behind the scenes, but still participate in the fun via e-mail. That person can use e-mail to encourage others to do their dirty work. Posting objectionable comments and so on. The beauty of staying disengaged in the nasty on-board comments, is that the troller's reputation remains dainty. It's very important to have at least one troller of the bunch free to appear to smooth things over with the general population of the group. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ ***This is the Help Section for Trollers in Distress*** 1. HELP! I've been identified as a troll! Whatever will I do? Call them a troll right back. (Optional: Get your friends to agree with you.) 2. HELP! I've been accused of making off-topic posts. Whatever will I do? Forthrightly declare that their own posts complaining about you are off-topic. Remind them that the group is unmoderated and you can post anything you please, so there. Bring out some of your extra addresses to flame them. 3. HELP! I've been caught in a lie. Take your pick: Change the subject, claim your posts were tampered with/nuked, claim the person who is calling you a liar is a liar, declare that you are afraid of the person, say the person has a mental problem, say it's a free country and you have the right to lie if you want to. Failing all that, get one or all of your aliases to say it. 4.. HELP! Nobody likes me. Well, what did you expect? Look at what you do for a living. Grow a thicker skin. ______ ______ ______ ______ ______ ______ ______ ______ /_____/ /_____/ /_____/ /_____/ /_____/ /_____/ /_____/ /_____/ Bye,

It must have been Petey that removed that, since I didn`t edit the quote in

.---------------------------
|I think your immaturity is showing badly...how old are you? No more than 15?
'---------------------------
You are correct, I am only 15. However I do not recollect any such postings
from Veronica, and I am not immature. In fact, I think that this petty reply
to a short light hearted message shows even greater immaturity than the
original message did.
.---------------------------

'---------------------------
Stupid postings eh? Well I`m not stupid, or in anyway inexperienced with
USENET. I have bloody been using it for at least five years now, and been in
this newsgroup almost that long. I think what you are basically getting at
is that you want to have this newsgroup entirely to youurself, where you can
post things to your heart's content without annoying anyone.
.---------------------------
|You did the same only a day or two ago by feeding and resurrecting the
|SPACE TRAVEL thread...when it had already been dead for 6days.
|Please don't be a "Casshole" Martin...you can do much better than that.
'---------------------------
I did not 'resurrect' anything. I just asked that it should stop, and in a
much nicer way that how you did for that matter.
And I can`t see it anymore, since I have the five copies of it on ignore.
<snip of troll FAQ>
I`m definately not a troll.

Well, it's good that you at least realize this, Colin. I hope, therefore, that despite your 150 years in this group, despite your supreme wisdom, despite your authorship of most of the RFCs relating to Usenet, despite the fact that you probably don't realize that I'm being sarcastic again yet, despite your omnipotence, despite your outright godliness, you take it upon yourself to `conduct you [sic] Net activities more sensibly', and not to bash Martin so much. (It worked for me, anyway -- you should have seen the first draft of this message. :-) Posting someone /else/'s picture really defeats the purpose of the ObAscii, because (1) it's been posted before, and (2) it doesn't take as long to do, so you don't calm down. If you cannot live with, or appreciate my posts...just don't read them... I've got absolutely nothing positive or helpful from your contributions to date. That is irrelevant where stupid postings are involved. Well you've only been here a few months, and I, since September 1993 when the group was created. The Stein Wars broke out ages ago long before you ever heard of this newsgroup "alt.ascii-art". Lots of people got involved in the past outbreaks...the fact that _you_ yourself, Matthew Thomas, personally missed them does not mean that they did not occur. If your experience and knowledge of this newsgroup "alt.ascii-art" and Usenet itself is as long as you say then you cannot have paid close attention to how this newsgroup, alt.ascii- art, has progressed, developed and performed over it's 5 years existence since it's creation in September 1993. I don't remember you _at all_ from 1993. It seems to me you did not appear here in "alt.ascii-art" until 1997, at the earliest, but correct me if I'm wrong. Very Shortly after your arrival you seemed to begin siding and supporting Casso and his views and activities because he encouraged you and told you by telling you he was 13 years old. Also consider...experience of Usenet or length of time acquiring that experience is no guarantee that you have become less clueless or conduct you Net activities more sensibly...irrespective of time. At age 15 now you must have started in usenet at 10 years old...too early IMNSHO. > You are correct, I am only 15. However I do not recollect any such > postings from Veronica, and I am not immature. In fact, I think > that this petty reply to a short light hearted message shows even > greater immaturity than the original message did. Once again if you claim to have been in alt.ascii-art as a Regular User/Reader for 5 years then you could not possibly have missed the _several_ postings from Veronica on how to handle Casso, his Stein Wars, or his excessive behaviour. I think what you might be saying is that you choose not to remember Veronica Karlsson's postings. If that is the case then it is your privilege so to choose. I've been here. Not much lately, only to check if the crap has stopped. Don't remember this group being about a dicksize contest by a non-artist, Colin. Whether you're right or wrong, all this crap is off-topic, and you should take it elsewhere because it spoils this group. -- Lennert.

So why did you make it after such a long absence from this newsgroup. If you want to flame me go ahead...I have tryed to do what I can for this newsgroup in my own way because I do enjoy it and always have. As far as your personal presence and contributions to this newsgroup, alt.ascii-art, over the past 2 or 3 years, regrettably there has been very little from you except complaints and flames. Usenet newsgroups are for everyone not only you or others. There is plenty of other disagreeable flames and material appearing here... I never see you say anything about those. Why be so selective in who you flame? I explain why I am selective inthe people I flame. Sorry, Lennart, this posting of yours was ill-tempered, ill-considered and very bad form. Bye,

Yeah...at _last_ I think you got it, Loonart...so try your own advice about _where_ to post...or alternatively, much more usefully, try posting something positive _here_ for a change please. That might help the tone of this newsgroup a little and every little helps. Thanks! Your personal objective seems to be posting insults and derogatory names ( not hard to guess who you picked that up from, is it Loonart? ) is much easier than doing pictures eh? Because you have posted only flames and no pictures I may have to do just the same. Any reason why I shouldn't? What's good for the goose should be good for the gander? Who needs pictures anyway? And, anyways, it sounds as though you have not thought much of my pics over the years? Now you know why I don't have a Website. Who on earth would want to see my crap? :-) BTW you used to do some stunning ASCII pics...but whatever happened to your brain since then? And now, Loonart, it is your turn to have the opportunity to respond to and to perpetuate this unhelpful, negative and braindead thread. It seems such a shame to waste the time and effort...but your privilege...Go Tuit :-) And...finally...maybe I will be just be sweet and kind and relent by posting an ObAscii, which actually I consider is my own own work, although I do not claim the actual text therein: ObAscii: oOO OOO OOO OOO OOo oOO oOO oOO OOo oOO THIS IS A TUIT OOo oOO ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OOo oOO OOo oOO OOo oOO At long last. For years you've been saying " I'll do that OOo oOO OOo oOO as soon as I get a round tuit." Now that you have a OOo oOO OOo oOO ROUND TUIT of your own, many things that you OOo oOO OOo oOO meant to do just may get done ! OOo oOO OOo oOO So get tuit !
